Getting ready to start trimming a 2800 sf presale. Homeowners have upgraded all areas budgeted for carpet to hardwood.
What amount of ‘gap’ should be left at the bottom when hanging interior doors when the flooring on both sides of the door is hardwood or tile instead of carpet- or should there be one enough to be noticeable? The raw hardwood and tile have been installed.

If you don't want to ask them
I would think you should be safe with max 3/4". Even all the way across would be highly recommended. In areas where a throw or area rug might be going-you may want more (bath for instance.) Tile is pretty cold unless heated underfloor.
Course, that from a dumb carpenter on the internet.
Depends on a couple of things. I'd find out the details of the tile/hardwood ... that's going to be your minimum. Plus maybe what 1/4"? Could be 1/8" I suppose. I'm not an expert ... and even though I've hung a bunch of doors ... I don't have a clue. But ... if you have your HVAC return air depending on your gap, you may need more space. If doors are routinely left open, this may not be an issue ... although some may argue against that approach.
My thumb suck is that you should have at least a half inch. You certainly want more than a quarter.
