I think maybe I screwed up. Ordered custom pre-hung doors. The salesman said they could come with casings installed. Sure, that will save time. Well, they have split jams. Normally I would use a single piece jam and add the casings. Can anyone help with tips on installing split jams? Looks like I still plumb to hinge side but need to be careful with nailing so that I do not interfere with assembly. Thanks for your help.

Herb,
Try clamping the two sides of the jamb together before nailing them off. This is one of those aplications where plumb hinge-side framing is a bonus if not a must.

*Herb, Place door in rough opening, plumb hinges, tack casing on hinge side, tack the rest of the casing keeping reveal the same. Open door and shim jam. I precut my shims about 3 1/2" and run them vertical as oppoese to horizonal with regular jams. 3 1/2" allows for the other half of the jam to have shim too.
*David, Shaky Jake. Thanks for your good advice. I used shims vertically and added more than usual. Also I was about to plum hinge side solid by adding to the stud. David, your tip on clamping the jams together before nailing was a big help. After all is done, split jams are a little tricky due to their flimsy nature. Once the jams are together they automatically adjust, with help from the clamps, so casings fit snug to the walls. lessions learned. On the first door, I planed the header shims to a tight fit. Checking for fit with the door everything was fine until I installed the second half of the jam. Since the jams I used fit together tongue and groove, it expanded the jam into the door opening. This caused the jam to interfere across the top of the door. After that, I was more careful sizing the shims and had no more problems. Thanks again for your help.
