under deck dry storage

hcalvert | Posted in Construction Techniques on February 23, 2007 10:58am

i would like to build a deck above a walk out basement. the walk out has concrete wall on two sides and door to the basement on the third side and is open on the forth side. i would like to have water tight deck w/ a roof above which could be used as an open deck also. the first floor of this deck would be open to wind driven rain and snow.

looking for ideas. i will be installing garage type door on the forth side building walls on the concrete sides and opening up the basement side. would like to store my bikes under the deck.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Here's the short version

Build new floor with pitch to drain. 3/4" plywood atop joists. 1/2" fiber board underlayment and EPDM membrane on plywood. 2 x 2 treated sleepers with EPDM cushion glued to bottom of sleepers, decking screwed to sleepers.

A couple of thoughts for you.  Most products are probably best when designed in from the start but everything is adaptable.

Build "normal" joist system, use T&G plywood glued & screwed, pitch the floor for drainage 1" every 8'0". Nail a 1 x 3 band around perimeter flush with the sub floor. Flash side walls that touch the deck surface 10" up the wall and 8" out on the deck surface. Flash the deck surface up and under any patio doors. Then FIBERGLASS the surface just like it was a boat!!!! Best and only water proof deck I know of.
    Pick your color and enjoy.

I am facing the same situation in my deck construction. I like the idea of the http://www.dekdrain.com/ system. My deck is 35x12 feet in size and it will have a roof over it. I will probably use a standing seam metal roof with some skylights in it. There is still a great chance of wind driven rain getting on the deck.
A friend has a covered Deck and used fiberglass over plywood for the deck. Over top of that he uses outdoor carpet. It is easy to clean and doesn't get hot in the sun. The fiberglass gets very hot in the sun if its not covered. The same goes for vinyl decking material over plywood (I had that before), in the sun you can't walk barefoot over it.
I will probably go with wood as a decking material this time. Western red Cedar is the popular choice were I live. I read a lot about other tropical hardwoods like Ipe but I don't know the cost of it here in BC.

I used a deck coating product from Gaco called GacoDeck, which you apply over an exterior plywood deck (built using standard construction techniques) and am very pleased with the results,  no mess, easy clean up, went on with roller...be sure to take your time doing the joint seam prep though, as it WILL show through the coating ..good luck

http://www.miracote.com  Search for their Miraflex II decking system.

    Specifically, the procedure is:

This is where I got stopped by the snow.  This decking goes on when I 've got warm enough weather - 50ish.
