I have some uneven subfloors (due to badly crowned joists; from 1/4 – 1/2″) that I’m in the process of leveling before installing the finish floor and I was wondering if there is a rule of thumb as to what can the human body percieve as being level. I’ve heard in the past that 1/4″ in 10ft. is fairly acceptable. Any comments or experience with this?
Thanks in advance

Will what is plumb and what is not is always open to debate. If your installing a finish floor product that has a shiney finish it will show every valley and cup. Sounds like you need to belt sand and flash patch the subfloor.
Best of luck

I think Bill C has it pegged right. I've worked on 200 year old houses whose floors (and walls, too) varied in inches. Because the house was so old, it was basically accepted. A 5 year old house, I don't think it would be .....unless you were a real estate agent and then its called character, or if it's really bad, a fixer upper.

A lot depends on the finish floor. Will it be wood plank? Will it be laid across the joists or parallel? Will the carpet have a pattern? Will sunlight shine across the floor perpendicular to the joists? Will you be able to live with yourself if you don't fix it properly? Will it ever be easier to fix it than it is right now?
*Oh Simon, You hit the nail on the head! Will it ever be easier to fix now? Gotta love it.Will, I would pull up the subfloor and shim the stuff. Why would you want to put down crappy subfloor with hills and valleys? Why not just shim the stuff, so the Ply is straight and plumb?
*Since the joists are crowned, I guess you have a hump in the middle of the florr? If you're willing to pull up the subfloor, you can rip off the crowns with a circular saw (done it, it's pretty easy ... once you've ripped everything up ...).If you're going to any trouble over this, go for level rather than an approximation. It makes later stuff much easier.
