Unfinished siding – how to prime / paint?!

Hi there, I’ve decided that pre-finished siding (like Maibec) isn’t in my budget, so I’m considering buying unfinished board and batten (pine). The cottage is 22 x 30′ with 8 foot walls and the peak on the gable end is 14′.
In terms of painting (Benjamin Moore Acrylic) before the siding goes up, I’ve been told the wood needs a coat on all sides. Is this the case? Can the back side just have a big box store water based primer? Which type of primer do you recommend? Can I roll this on? My guess it the wood will be a bit rough.
I don’t have an inside place to do the work or store the painted wood. Just the thought of the painting is slightly overwhelming!
Should I really be considering other options? Any advice will be much appreciated.

Just spoke to a Benjamin Moore store. They recommended ArborCoat - 2 coats in the front and one on the back - is this a good option?
The more paint you put on the longer your siding will last. One primer and one top on all 6 sides.
Also, make sure you prime EVERY cut while doing the install.
Thanks Everyone! We'll prime the cuts.
ArborCoat is a stain - is that OK? I think we need ~9 gallons :(
ArborCoat is great stuff. We use it a bunch.
