Unpaintable caulk

unTreatedwood | Posted in Construction Techniques on July 26, 2004 07:44am

so I learn the hard way that GE II caulk for Tub/Kitchen is not paintable…ouch.  I wonder if there is a product that I can put over this caulk to make a paintable surface. … or do I need to remove, a la scrape off, this caulk in order to paint it.  Otherwise, the bathroom turned out perfect!  I was hoping there was an epoxy or something to bail me out!!

Just finished the first coat of finish paint on the LEXEL.  Great suggestion!!  Never heard of the stuff, but it acts like the "magic bullet".  Spec sheet on it was quite interesting, as well.  Thanks for bailing me out!!

BUT!!!!  BUT!!!! It said so on the tube..

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming....                                                                   WOW!!!   What a Ride!

I thought 'Silicone II' was supposed to be paintable.  That was the "II" part.

I'm not sure what the I or the II stand for with the GE silicone caulks, but paintability rating on both tubes is "no".  In fact, I just got back from HD and GE now offers a special "paintable XST" tube, (I think it's called), packaged with 2 tubes of GE II.  Clearly, I'm not the only one unhappy its paintability issue.  I dont' think I would want to be the first one to put an "unpaintable" caulk on the market.  maybe there are others, but it would surprise me.

It's been awhile but my memory tells me that the diff is in the flow, workabilioty and thermal sustainability. See if the GE II is n't rated up to 2000°F

I had the opposite problem -- used paintable silicone for some bathroom fixtures. It turned yellow within a month. "Saved" it by painting the caulk with model airplane paint.
