I have a walk out basement, half finished, with a very uneven six-inch slab, with no vapor barrier underneath. I am planning on carpeting in some areas, probably pergo (or similar) in the bath and kitchen. I am using LevelQuick self-leveling patch to flatten out the slab, and am thinking of using Homasote ComfortBase under the carpet and p-lam floor to provide some R-value and bridge some of the rough spots. (This will also come up even with the 1/2″ plywood strips I intend to shoot into slab at the perimeters to provide nailing for tackless.)
Both Pergo and Homasote call for a vapor barrier, but I am concerned about causing moisture to be trapped underneath. I also considered not using a vapor barrier because the back of the Comfortbase is scored (apparently so it can breathe), or going over the slab with UGL to vapor-proof it under the finish floor.
Has anyone developed a mold or moisture problem when a vapor barrier was installed over a slab? Anybody have any experience with using comfortbase? Any other recommendations on addressing this situation.
