Thank you to everyone for all the great posts! I have been lurking for years now and have learned tons. I think I actually have my first legit question (or maybe not). I have been trying to piece together bits of information to come up with an answer, but maybe some input may help. New construction, Pacific Northwest. I REALLY wanted spray foam insulation until I saw the bid. Apparently, hybrid systems are becoming popular due to the lower cost. 1†foam to get the air seal then bats on top of that. So, that is what we went with. However, WA has a twist on that that will be in effect soon. Apparently, if Mars aligns properly with Jupiter, it is possible that with only one inch of foam, the dew point may occur between the foam and fiberglass. So, soon, in WA, hybrid systems will require 2†of foam to eliminate the dew point problem. We decided to just do the 2†of closed cell foam now with R23 bats over that. I know opinion may differ in this forum, but I am pretty happy so far and it is a done deal. Drywall just started. The question arises from another post talking about PVA primer being used as a vapor barrier. I never considered PVA as a good, high end barrier, so I never gave it a second thought. But… if I have closed cell foam, then bats, followed by drywall and PVA, am I creating the dreaded vapor barrier sandwich? If so, what should I prime the drywall with? My assumption that a good quality interior paint breaths and the problem would be with the pva. Thanks for the help.
