Andrew, that's what the electricians say (at least for paddle fans.) OTOH, I see 'em frequerntly and they're always working.
How about a 4 position paddle fan control?
*You will notice that the motor control is wired "backwards" from the dimmer. That is, the position just after it clicks on is full power, and the further you turn it, the slower the fan runs. I am told that this is to make sure that there is enough power to get the fan motor moving.Fan controllers often have additional circuitry to keep the motor from buzzing, which will typically occur with many dimmers.b Finally, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR FAN MOTOR CAN BE OPERATED BY A SPEED CONTROLLER!
*why would you want to slow down a fart fan? Is it that loud or so over sized? Dimmer switches use variable resistor circuitry, thus the fan motor doesn't get full current at slower speeds. Slower speeds than the motor is rated for means more heat build up and thus a shorter life. I would just let'r rip.Dave
