venting gable roof w/ shed dormers?
I’m confused as to whether I should vent the gable portion of the roof on my house. Upstairs are 2 bedrooms w/ kneewall closets under the gable and collar ties at the top of the gable. I believe when I tore off the old siding etc that the soffits were plywood w/ no vents, although there is a gable vent on each end of the house. I don’t see any signs of moisture damage. I added the porch and false rafter tails to meet the old gable roof and did not vent any of that as I thought it was un-necessary. The rooms upstairs are cold and drafty in winter and hot in summer. Should I treat this gable roof like a cathedral ceiling and fill the bays w/ insulation and then finish off the inside of the kneewall closets to make them as airtight as possible? Should I vent, insulate and then finish the closets in the same manner? If I do vent the gable roof should I also vent the porch roof ans soffits formed by the false rafter tails? Yikes! My next house will be a rancher. Thanks in advance. P.S I’m computer stupid so if may attachment doesn’t work you can see a picture of the house at message #40632.1. Also I live in NJ wher we have pretty good temp extremes if that matters. Dave Crawford
