We are building a new house and the builder has suggested that we use Vetter windows. I know they are less expensive than Pella and some others, but how do they stack up?

Hi I'm a builder and my opinion is that if I like the look of the window, it functions well(go to a store and test it), and it isn't too expensive then go for it. Some of the least expensive windows have 25year warrantees.I think you pay a lot for a name in windows. We've used Pella before and I personally don't like them. They don't operate very easily. In tools, you get what you pay for; In windows, I don't think you do. Lastly, the reason I wrote to you is that I'm building my own house in March and I'm going to use Vetters all around. I'm no expert but I would definitely recommend Vetter.

Related Question: With respect to double hung windows, are there any opinions if there is a correlation between energy efficient windows and stiff sash operation?

Thanks for your views, J Alpine.

I looked at most (maybe all) of the brands before purchasing for my new construction. Considered cost, style, energy ratings, etc.... I am pleased with the Vetters that I selected. I have all double hung and opted for the simulated true divided lights - they look great. All of the windows (in the class of wood/pine interiors with wood or clad exteriors) are may about the same and have the same jambs and basic features - The Pellas that I speced were NOT as nice as the Vetters and were 40% more.

We built a house last year using Vetter. Used a combination of double hungs and casement windows. The quality seems fine in general but the casements are not as high quality in my opinion as Peachtree casements, which I had on my old house. I could not afford Peachtree again.
The price for the windows was attractive though, and for the money, I think we have good windows. Some other brands seem to be overpriced.
Some of the new Vetter windows leaked however. It was like pulling teeth to get both Vetter and my distributor to respond and replace them. The point being, it is not just the overall quality, but servicing problems is important.
Maybe Vetter has improved on this since I bought mine, but it was a very difficult experience.
