Attached are a couple of pics of some vinyl siding. I was at the house to talk about the roof, but I couldn’t help but notice the pattern on the siding.
This pattern shows up on the east, south, and west. I couldn’t see it on the north.
Clearly, the fading is in line with the wall studs. And the sun must be involved. But what is going on?

Probably dew collects there.
Rich,
Due to the way that heat transfers at stud locations it does cause dew to form either on or between the studs (dependant upon weather conditions).
That moisture differential can cause a difference in other fators that add to the actual aging process or appear as aging signs.
Furthermore, it is plausible that the heat exchange may cause the vinyl to dry faster at stud locations vs bays and again adds to the aging effects.
Another point is the quality of the vinyl siding. Quality brands will not age anywhere as bad as baragain brands... it has to do with the quality of the vinyl. The same thing goes for vinyl wondows that become brittle with age... it is a quality-of-vinyl issue.

What you have there is an invasion of the 16OC stud beetle. They off gas as they have their tailgate parties on the heads of the sheathing nails.
That gas combines with the vinyl to age it at an accelerated rate.
It's too bad they didn't use right treatment to prevent this. it is probably too late now to inject lady beetles to teach the stud beetles some manners and get them to reign in their wild ways.
Personally, I think it's the burrito line of the species that is the worst offender, but I don't get to see much vinyl work to compare to.

Wonder how old the siding is?
"Wonder how old the siding is?"Sorry. I guess I might have mentioned that.Just 15 years or so. Which is how old the house is. The 3 tab shingles from the out of business Atlas Roofing are pretty shot. Lots of seriously curled tabs..

Sell a fibercement replacement siding job.
"Sell a fibercement replacement siding job."One reason why I was there is because I am currently not scheduling any new jobs. We are moving to Fort Wayne in the not too distant future and I may already have more work booked than I have time to do. So I was a good candidate to evaluate the roof.
