Looking at a small 700+sq.ft. house as a possible get-away+ rental ownership. Possibly would want to add some new windows and a deck.Any problems doing this with existing vinyl siding? House is about 20 years old.

Astrid:
There is a small hand tool called a siding zipper (or someting like that) that is used for "unzipping" vinyl siding.
*I'm just guessing, but it might be nice to know the brand, style, and color of the siding and if it is still made. Then if you damage some you can replace it.Rich Beckman
*Shouldn't be any problem. May have to add new wrapped trim around the windows. No big deal. Jeff
*It's sold under the name "Side Swiper". There may be others. Not sure if it will work on all brands of siding, since the manufacturers are always coming up with something new...
*Astrid,The deck wouldn't be a problem, just remove whatever siding necessary to attach the ledger, flash it, and re-install the siding after cutting it around the ledger. Or better yet, build the deck independent of the house and don't attach the two. For the window situation, I'd need to know what type of windows you're talking about, replacement or new construction. If new construction, how big are the exterior casings, are the casings wrapped with aluminum, are you adept with vinyl siding installation, would you mind slightly smaller windows than what is there now?Red dog
*Thank you for the info, you guys. Will show DH what I have found out about vinyl siding when he gets home this PM. He has a computer business, does website creation and hosting and sells computers also. All out of a small office (redone carriage house with a neat skylight in the ceiling) in Silver City, NM.
*You should put a lot of effort into not damaging the existing siding as new siding will not match. If yours is coloured, new stuff won't match because yours has faded and they quit making that colour anyway. If yours is white, it will have no gloss and the new stuff will. The best thing is to take off the siding (from the top down), install the new windows, make them watertight and reinstall the siding. Don't depend on vinyl siding to keep rain water out of your house. It won't. (Is rain a problem in New Mexico?)Anyway, the siding shouldn't be anything to worry about.
