Hello,
Looking for some help resolving a friendly disagreement between myself (carpenter) and a friend (electrician). He has an attic that he is finishing into an office and is applying paneling to the underside of the roof rafters (2×6 16″o.c. about 16′ long). He is concerned that this might overtax the rafters and cause them to sag. I contend that they should easily be able to carry this extra weight. Anyone care to plug in an opinion…….
Thanks
matt

If it truly is paneling, like 1/4", then that should not pose any problems. Likewise adding insulation. But you might want to consider if the attic floor is rated to support an office...many are only good for seasonal storage.
Do it right, or do it twice.
Thanks for the response. It will indeed be paneling (with insulation). The floor framing seems fine - 2x8 16"oc with about a 12'6" span.
Thanks
Matt
Seems to me that 16' is awfully long for a 2X6 rafter.
I'd go with your friend........
Spend the afternoon. You can't take it with you.
Boss,
You have me thinking that the 2 x 6's that my 2nd floor (32' span) was framed with might be a tad undersized for floor joists? lol.
Jon
Why not?
Some have tried 16' spans with 2x4's DW'd. ROAR.
Well...house was built in 1942, no problems since. It is a tract house and several around it have been finished in a similar manner.
Would you suggest beefing them up somehow?
