Gearing up to design and install the stone wall/mantel(s) behind the woodstove in my son’s new house. They have selected the stone color and style – “Country Ledgestone” from Mutual Materials. Sort of size related rectanglular faces tans-browns-greys and pale reds. Nice looking. The black 6″ stove pipe will go vertically from the top of the stove through the vaulted ceiling above.
I’m thinking of a horizontal line or two defined by the mantel(s) which might eventually be an old 4″x8″x12′ piece of walnut that her family’s sawmill has had since the 1940’s or something.
Wall behind the woodstove is 100″ wide (+/-), the line for the main mantel is at 60″ off the floor, but could be changed pretty easilly.
But I’m not necessarilly looking for a design specific to their house. More interested in photos of, or references to books with photos of various stone behind woodwstove details. You’d think there’d be plenty of them around, right?
Anyone have any favorite photos? Or photos of any such set ups you think look good?
Thanks for any help – Jim

Jim,
Have you done a search on Houzz for images? You should be able to find all kinds of good examples of mantle/stone walls there.

Take a look at the Masonry Heater Association website. Though primarily a mas. heater org, some of their veneer designs might tickle your fancy. MSA.org.
Here's a link to a friends operation in N.C. Mas. heaters again. The man knows his craft. He's worked on htrs in the orient, the cold of Finland, throughout S.E. Asia. The intricate tiles of Europe.
I can send you his email or phone number. He married Joyce's college roommate or, Brenda married my roommate. We go back.
youll find Tom's work at the MSA site as well.

Clearance to combustable materials
Be sure to check your clearances from the stove pipe to combustible materials (the wood mantel)...typically 18" or so for an unisulated pipe...check your local code enforcement agency...
