I am in the process off inquiring on having drywall hung. Contractors and drywallers are giving different opinions>
Some say that I should do it myself because the job is in their eyes to small.
Others suggest that I finish hang drywall vertically using only 8 X 4 sheets. Others are telling me that the drywall should be hang horizontally using a drywall sheet at least as long as the span of the wall or ceilling. Some say it should be nailed. other say it should be screwed. Others say it should glued ans screwed. I even had a contractor tell me that I should use blueboard and have it plastered.
I honestely do not know what to do. I am a confused customer getting conflecting suggestions.
Any thoughts anyone and what should I look for………or I should say ask for……….and how do I know if the job will be done right……….I guess the contract should be written a certain way.
Thanks for the help guy……….
Any questions feel free to e-mail me………..Thanks again
P.S, I was told that drywalling and plastering cost about the same in Pittsburgh…….

Press, Here's what I would suggest. Find a GC or a good carpenter or a reliable drywall contractor that you can trust, and then explain the type of finish you want. Let them help you figure out how to get there.
You already asked all those guys that could look at the job and walked away confused. Now you come on the web and ask a bunch of faceless names for another opinion. I would advise not doing the job yourself as it's one of the not fun jobs in construction. Find a good man or woman you can trust and hire them. If you don't know any, ask trusted friends (and hope for the best) for a direct referral........not necessarily -"I know this guy"..........or "my BIL can do that".
best of luck.

I agree with Calvin...sounds like you have not hung much drywall in the past, so it's probably not something you really want to get into, unless it's in a room where you don't mind experimenting and accepting what may be a less than desirable finish. The contractors who say the job's too small are really saying that they either don't want to do it, or their overhead is so high that they could not be competitive. There are small contractors in your area that could do the job, the trick is finding them. You might drive around and find a house under construction, stop and ask the gc if he knows of a person who does small jobs, repairs and such.
There's lots of debate about the 'correct' way to hang drywall: vertical, horizontal, seamless, etc. Depends on the size of the room, the quality of the framing, the preferences of the hangers, and the skill of the finishers. How big is the room? 12 ft rock is available, but it's difficult to maneuver and could be too large for the room. Screwing is the best easy solution, screw & glue is better but takes a little more time and material. Nailing is the third choice, although a few nails to hold the rock in place until you can go back with screws is ok. Ceiling rock is usually thicker, and nails are not a good choice.
Plaster vs drywall? I think that's a regional preference, based on the availability of skilled labor.
Do it right, or do it twice.
