Wall heater question

Jeff | Posted in Energy, Heating & Insulation on November 20, 2003 12:23pm

Hi all

Decided to come to the forum for advice again (Boy, is this place great).

I looked at a den remodel today (winter work).

The customer has a Empire Gas heater on the wall.

Low unit, not tall, with a fan to circulate heat built in.

He wants me to remove all the old junky board on the walls and panal and build in wall units.

No problem with the remodel, but the wall heater has me thinking.

I remember that panaling is supposed to be installed over drywall.

Is it safe to have the heater mounted right to wood panaling (with or without drywall under it.

Empire doesn’t really give any info on this at the web site.

I’m ok on clearances, insulation, vents, etc.

Just don’t know how hot the back of the unit gets and is there any fire hazard.

I plan to do this once, the right way (I’m already an expert at the wrong way).

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you all

Jeff

I 've got a tall one thats a 50,000btu in a rental that I replaced and it was 0 clearence, it had direct connect flanges- to 2x4 stud bay.

Get the model # and go to web site for install instructions or post it to me and I 'll see if we can find the details.

I think this might do you for info. blow it up a little or go to the site. The details are a little small but I think you'll be able to get the info.

I tried to paste the detail, page 3 but I can't get it to the Breaktime page so just go to the site, or send me your E so I can send the page.

        http://www.empirecomfort.com/

This might be easier. Then go to the wall heaters.

DV-35 and down load the pdf file.

          Thanks Clay

I went to the Empire site and read it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that they don't say anything about wood panaling.

They just say it's ok to mount to drywall or wood studs.

I take it that means it's ok to mount onto wood panaling?

Hi I just took a look and saw your question. The scematic that is shown puts the ve nt out the back and I think the important thing is that it shows the distance from the edge of the vent to combustables. So if you make the clearence your good to go. Make sure were talking about the same info. I tried to post the scematic but couldn't get it to transfer. I think that is part of the server function at breaktime. Look at that page 3 on the pdf and see the details of the distance to combustables. If your panneling goes all the way across you need to cut it back to the studs, so you get the required clearence

I'll try to see if I can get the picture transfered over to this site, may be in word or some such.

Still can't get the page across platforms. I'm a better remodeler than computer engineer.

The page #3 display is very clear on distance to combustables, not what it says but what the picture shows. It doesn't say panneling  but it does show distance to combustables and panneling is.

Send me your E-mail address so I can send the display.

            Clay
