Can anyone tell me what the NEC specifies as to the location of the outlet for a wall mounted microwave? I have a customer that is nuts. She wants me to put the outlet in the attic so there will not be one in the cabinet over the unit. She claims it takes up too much space.

Mike, I think you can put an outlet behind the unit in the wall if its truly a wall mount and not an in cabinet mount.Vince
*By "wall mounted," do you mean an over-range unit with a fan? I have one to put in, and already have put the receptacle outlet in the cabinet location above as the mfgr instructs. The cord is too short to go anywhere else anyway. I think the NEC has a problem with receptacles in inaccessible locations. i think of them as a mild fire hazard -- they can get hot -- and wouldn't want to put it in the attic where if it starts smoking no one will know. The NEC does say that appliance recpetacle outlets must be within 6 feet of the appliance (CABO 4401.6). Flexible cords may not be run through holes in walls, ceiling, floors. (CABO 4409.1.)This should be enough for you just to say "it's illegal."
