I am working on a bathroom project and have run into some problems. Any advice is welcome at this point! First of all I want to replace my tub/shower tiles, but, they are in mud. The tiler says that the tub will have to be replaced because the old tile and mud are a different thickness than the new greenboard and tile and will leave a line along the perimeter of the tub. The tiler is also concerned about damaging the tub while tearing down the old tiles and mud. I talked to a plumber about replacing the tub and he suggested that I keep the tub because my toilet is the same color (blue) – he indicated that the color is no longer made. The toilet works great, it is a wall mounted, high volume, low noise version which the plumber says I cannot get anymore (he says wall mount toilets are no longer made). So, I thought about getting a new white tub and getting the toilet re-glazed. I called a company that re-glazes bathroom fixtures and they told me that toilets cannot be re-glazed inside (the bowl)- only on the outside. DOES ANYONE HAVE ADVICE ON RE-TILING, SOURCES FOR WALL MOUNTED TOILETS, OR RE-GLAZING EXPERTS? I really want this project to be done well and with high quality!

If your tiler wants to replace tile in mud with tile on green board for a tub surround, get someone else. This is an inferior installation. If you have a cast iron enamel tub, any residue on the exposed tub should clean off.
Wall hung toilets are still made. Just look at some public restrooms. The trouble is you may not be able to get one to fit the carrier you have. The wall would have to be opened to replace the carrier. If your plumber tells you that wall hung toilets are no longer made, perhaps you should get a new plumber.
*I don't know about the toilets, but I just re-did a tub surround over Christmas. A company advertises in FHB for protective products. I tried them and they worked fine. Basically, you paint the tub with a thick rubbery paint that is watersoluble. I gave it two coats and when I removed it, not a scratch. I didn't do my surround the correct way, so I shall probably rot in FHB hell, but basically, I used Duroc with dry wall screws - but I did cover them with Durabond. Your guy should be able to shim the wall, etc and make it work. But, it is work, and if he is a tile setter without a circular saw, and one of Blue's small hammers, well he may have difficulty there. Good luckDennis
*Beth, I agree with Mike re: your tileman. I am quite confident the existing tile can be demo'd with the tub in place. In fact, I do this about 30 times a year. You can protect the tub by two different methods. One, Lay plywood and carpet pad on top of the tub. This completely covers the tub and does not let anything fall into or on the tub. Two, lay a clean cotton dropcloth the bottom of the tub. Cover with carboard, lay a second clean dropcloth across the entire tub. Use duct tape to adhere the dropcloth to the tub at the perimeter. Now, another point: you say you want a good job. But you are considering going with a tile installation directly over greenboard. What gives? This is not the best installation for a wet area, such as a tubsplash. Cement wall board, at the verey least. Mud mortar setting bed is bestter. As for wall hung toilets, yes they are available, quite readily, I might add.Sounds like you need a couple of new contractors. Are the trying to railroad you 'cause you are a woamn?
