Watcha getting yourself for Christmas?
Anybody treating themselves to anything special? I bought so much for myself last Christmas that I’m pretty content in the tool department. I’m still thinking about getting those Danner power forman GTX’s.
I know everybody gets something for themselves in the name of Christmas. So let’s have it. Saw? Hammer? Tool belt?

I think I've talked myself into a new laser distance meter. Checked out the Hilti PD30 at Home Depot for a good while the other day and was pretty impressed, although I passed on that particular model because it's lack of features and only a 4 measurement memory limit.
Think I'll get the Spectra / Trimble unit from Amazon.
Merry xmas to me, merry xmas to me....

I bought a decent 'starter' guitar last week and have been playing the daylights out of it since. I hadn't played in 25 years (except the mandolin) and I forgot how much fun, and how relaxing it is. yesterday I sat down 3 or four times and picked along to my internet radio for a break.
I've got plans on breaking mine out after about ten years. I'm gonna wait until next weekend when the wife goes out of town. She hates the star spangled banner wide open full feed back out of tune at seven in the morning.

Gunner,
My coffee maker broke. It used to grind and brew and I loved it. I buy the beans at Dunkin Donuts and put them in the grinder and turn it on and the smell of those beans are the best. I pick my son up so he can smell the beans as well and he loves it and wants a fresh cup also.
Tomorrow I'm going to Costco and buying Cuisinart Grind & Brew Thermal 10-Cup Automatic Coffeemaker for myself.

Joe, we got that Cuisinart Grind and Brew coffee maker for a wedding shower gift two years ago and still love that thing.
Set the the timer and wake up to fresh ground, fresh brewed coffee, ready when you are. Awesome. It also keeps the coffee hot and fresh tasting for a long time as it uses the thermal pot instead of a burner to maintain temperature. Sweet deal.
I drink my coffee out of my thermos at noon time and it still tastes great even though it was brewed 7 hours ago at that point.
A fine choice for a Christmas present to yourself.
You make me want to go and get the coffee maker right now and then go to Dunkin Donuts and get the coffee beans.Joe Carola
We just got one of those. The wife found it half off last weekend.Pretty cool contraption. It's my first ground beans experience. So I've got a lot of taste testing to do.

Wasnt going to get anything. In a store today, saw they still had the high speed multimasters big bro sitting there. Supercut they call it. Little bigger, different head. I said "Ed, you ever gonna sell that thing?" He said no, not as long as the little ones are sitting next to it for so much less. I said I'll make an offer if you really want to get rid of it. He said I got boxes of demo blades that go with it if you want. So I said 350 and he said sold.
Wanna buy a slightly used Multimaster? I love a good deal.

Girlfriend just brought our 19 lb. cat home from the vet. Had his teeth cleaned, no joke, and he had two bad teeth that needed to get sealed--$400. Happy smiles for all,

"Every sale has five basic obstacles: no need, no money, no hurry, no desire, no trust." -- Zig Ziglar
John, have you ever had a dog as a pet? I'm not trying to give you a hard time or anything, I'm just curious.
Seems to me that after a few months of companionship with "man's best friend" most dog owners would do just about anything for their buddy. The bond is inexplicable. I love my dog as much (maybe even more!) than a lot of the people in my life that I'm close with. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.
About a year after I got Mulligan, he started developing a limp. I was working hourly at the time for around $17/hr, single, living in an apartment, and making truck payments. There wasn't much in the savings account at the time. In fact, there wasn't a savings account.
Anyway, he was looked at by my vet and she recommended taking him to a orthopedic surgeon. She believed he had a piece of puppy cartiledge that broke off inside the socket of his shoulder. She said it was from growing fast while some of his young cartiledge had not yet turned to bone. She said he also had early signs of displaysia and would need four joints surgically repaired to correct them otherwise he would face a lifetime of pain. She said each joint would cost approx. $3000. She painted a pretty bleak picture, and I was crushed.
So I put my brand new truck in the Want-Ad and made arrangements to borrow some money from my brother, some from my folks, and some from my boss. My boss was going to lend me the balance and knock me down to $12/hr until it was paid off. I didn't think twice about it.
When we visited the orthopedic surgeon he did a bunch of x-rays and he too found the bone chip in Mulligan's socket. He explained the procedure and the costs involved. He also felt that it was too early to really diagnose the displaysia and operating on that would be jumping the gun as it may not be necessary. He told me to try one other thing before we operate on the bone chip. He had my take Mulligan home and run him hard in the backyard for a couple hours. Then he wanted me to keep him relatively immobile for a few days as he would be in pain afterwards. He also gave my anti-inflammatories to help the pain. It worked. The running moved the bone chip to place in the socket where it wouldn't bother him much and he's been fine ever since.
We still have him x-rayed every couple years and I my stomach drops every time I think I see him limp, but knock on wood, he's been healthy as a horse.
Point I'm trying to make is that I'd put myself in debt to keep my dog alive and healthy. Of course it's all relative. I didn't have a whole lot back then, and as they say, when you've got nothing.... you've got nothing to lose. But I'd write that $12,000 check tomorrow if he needed it.
If you've never had a dog, any maybe you've had a bunch, I have to tell you that you need to get one at some point in your life. My dog is one of the most comforting positive experiences of my whole life. Truly man's best friend.
Brian
I had a dog given to me once, German Shepard, not unlike yours.
This dog was huge, he was only about 1 year old when we got him and he weighed about 120. One of the biggest shepards that I had see.
He started limping around shortly after we had him. Having grown up working on a farm where among other things they raised Newfoundland, St. Bernard's, and Great Pyranesse(sp?), all big dogs and prone to hip displaysia, so I had a good idea what to look for regarding it.
I took the dog to the vet expecting to hear the worst. Vet asked about diet and told me that she didn't think it was displaysia but thought that it was to much protein in his diet.
Changed dog food brands and everything cleared up!
I was prepared to pay the bill to have him fixed and luckily I didn't have to. Man I miss that dog. His bark would scare the crap out of everybody but he was the biggest baby I'd ever seen.
Doug
His bark would scare the crap out of everybody but he was the biggest baby I'd ever seen.
LOL, that pretty much sums up Mulligan. He was 110 lbs last year and we've tapered him down to a very lean 80 lbs on Dr's recomendations to ease any strain on his joints. He's big, black, and people say he's intimidating. But I know he's all marshmallow inside. He sits outside the bathroom door and whines when my wife takes a shower. Runs away from the cat when he gets too close and she takes a swipe at him. Creampuff.
I'm sorry you lost yours. That must've been awful. I dread the day.....
Brian
Here's another dog that has a bark that'll scare the living crap out of you!
I was working on this house and "Rocko" is 110 lbs of muscle, he loves to play and its damn hard to do anything with him standing behind you shoving his nose into you to get you to play with him.
The Ms. of the house is a playboy playmate(I don't think its the monthly one, one of those lesser playmates, (you know, girls of the Big 12 or something like that)She says that Rocko will come running and jump in the shower while she's in their! I'm thinking this dog is a-hell-of a lot smarter then most!!! She cant weigh but 105 soaking wet! Not that I ever got to see that but ohhhh, if Rocko could only talk.
When you come to the door you'd swear this thing is going to take your head off, but he's the biggest p u s s y I have ever seen in a dog, problem is I'm always afraid he's going to go "pit bull" on my azz and kill me!
NOw that I've completly taken this thread off track I better stop!
Doug
Sounds like a smart dog.
Working for a Playmate, huh? Boy that must suck.

Talking about a playmate in the shower and all he gives us is a picture of a dog. Sheeze. You'd think he was an engineer or something.

John, have you ever had a dog as a pet? I'm not trying to give you a hard time or anything, I'm just curious.
Yeah, I'm a dog person. Love dogs. Grew up in the country where the dogs weren't just pets...they told you when intruders were around, they kept stray dogs/coyotes away from the livestock...as well as the general companionship/play.
But growing up in the country means being practical. Something most 'city folks' rarely have to practice. That means that you don't make pets out of the livestock..or if you do, you realize that that animal is still heading towards its fate (little paper-wrapped bundles in your freezer or someone else's).
The practical way of life extends to pets. If a dog got too old to pull his own weight, then he'd probably be made second string and a younger dog would be brought in to cover the slack. The second stringer would ge given just as much food and love as he/she got when first string.... But if the dog needed $12k worth of work, you don't bankrupt the family... you weigh the options and chances are putting him to sleep is going to win out vs a $12k vet bill.
It isn't always easy, but you don't bankrupt the family over a pet. It is a no-brainer for 'country folks'. Even if you have $12k in the bank, you don't spend $12k fixing a dog or cat. Losing a pet is terrible and unfortunate, but it is just a fact of life that humans outlive their pet dogs and cats. All the doctors and surgery in the world isn't going to change that (not with our current technology anyway).
Glad Mulligan didn't need the full treatment. Sounds like he's got knees like mine.. except in my case its the lack of cartlidge that occasionally causes a bone chip to jam the knee.
Truly man's best friend.
I agree completely. Watched a show on Military channel a while back about war dogs and it just brings a tear to your eye how a dog will sacrifice him/herself for their handler. You'd never see a cat do that ;)jt8
"Every sale has five basic obstacles: no need, no money, no hurry, no desire, no trust." -- Zig Ziglar
John, I appreciate your thoughtful response. But I don't think it's a city folk/ country folk thing. I don't and never have lived much closer than 20 min or so from an actual city. I grew up in rural town and now live in a town that's not much more than a glorified farming community. But I do agree that it has a lot to do with money in the 'big picture'. Both cash on hand, and the ability to recoup in a timely manner.
And I also have to agree that I went and assumed my position was everyone's position. That was a bit unfair. If I had a family at the time, children specifically, I'd have to figure that into the equation as well. And, of course, I'd have to believe that it ever came down to food on my child's table or Mulligan's joints.... well it'd be a sad day, but there would certainly be food on the table.
I also wasn't really talking about putting myself into long term bankruptcy or financial ruin. Just a set-back that would temporarily effect quality of living and conveniences. If 12K is going to cause a catastrophic collapse and result in a situation where you probably wouldn't be able to take care of the dog anyway, then I'd have to agree that it would be a foolish endeavor.
Thanks for sharing.
I've got to admit that I'm an animal lover, and have spent my fair share on vet bills, nonetheless, here's a little ditty I wrote about our cat:

Thanks. I think I've seen that ad, and the Dell flat panels are pretty nice, but I don't think they have built in speakers which is something I like.I heartly recommend Dell to people who ask me, but I tend to build my own computers. Long ago, I adopted a all SCSI attitude. Can't quite keep it now, but I still use a lot of SCSI devices. I can't seem to part with a working hard drive, even if it is only 3GB!
well since you build your own this is a little mootbut you can buy speakers that attach to the flatpanel, also I think they have the sonic but not sure.their site isn't very friendly cause depending what path you take you get differnt options for the same machine.
