Good Day:
I live in Victoria, BC (similiar climate to Seattle, WA) and I am in the process of tearing down my deck. The deck was 2×10 joists covered by 2×6 and the front area is where the joist are cantilevered from the main floor. Some areas were never painted and the joists are discolored and soft (rotted?). The only area I want to reuse is where the joists continue from the main floor and cover it with plywood and a vinyl deck. I wanted to know since the joist will not get wet again can I use the Clear wood preservative to treat the wood and would this prevent any further detoriation? Or is it better to cut the wood out sister new joists?
Thanks again,
Michael

Greetings C,
This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again.
Perhaps it will catch someones attention that can help you with advice.

Can you take some pictures to show us what the joists you want to use look like? discolored and soft joists are not a good way to start off a new deck. The money you save now by not buiding new may cost you more in the long run by having to replace the joists sooner than the new decking you put down.

Plain wood preservative will slow down the deterioration process slightly, but not make a big difference. There are epoxy products that will do a better job, but nothing will make rotted joists be structurally sound again. Better to cut out and replace with good treated lumber.
