My 8 year old oil fired water heater needs to be replaced. It has corroded through. One trusted friend recommends we reroute the plumbing and create a separate zone in the heating system and heat the water through the furnace with a storage tank receiving the hot water. He feels the furnace does better if it is not allowed to shut down in the summer. Another friend says I will prolong the life of my furnace 15 years if I turn it off in the summer and should avoid the afore mentioned system. Is either significantly more energy efficient? Any thoughts?

Check out Energy Kinetics System 2000.
You may be interested in what they have to offer, especially if you use oil and might consider a boiler replacement.
(No, we don't own stock in them.)

Anyway, they have a indirect howater heating setup that uses a stainless steel heat exchanger.
We're looking into using their system and I have another topic seeking feedback on them.
*Bill....you need a boiler not a furnace to heat your water and it needs to have a coil in it to do it, or you need to make a zone...I think the best option would be a propane fired water heater for $150....It will last a long time and will be economical to operate....If placed near the wall you can vent direct or you can buy one with a power vent for $50 more....You can install it faster than you can get an answer hear at Breaktime too! What do ya think?near the trickle,aj
