Hey all, there is water leaking from what seems to be the base of the chimney in a rental house I own. I noticed it after a rain but it has rained before and it never leaked. As a matter of fact the house inspector was there the morning after a heavy rain and it was not there. I have only owned this since May but I redid the kitchen and my brother was in there with a sledge hammer taking cabinets out. Could he have damaged the chimney? I don’t even know what kind of a guy to call to look at it. HELP!!! Pamilyn

Most likely the flashing around the chimney has gone bad. Call a roofer or a chimney sweep.
Thanks, I will try that. I have a home warranty on the property..will try a roofer...Pamilyn
Also check the chimney cap. You can start with a pair of binoculars. If it is a masonry chimney there is probably a cement type cap around the flue tile. These are very prone to cracking. If it is a wood framed chimney, (I'm guessing not) assuming that the flue (metal?) exits the top of the chimney, then there is flashing up there. It could even be something as simple as rain entering the uncovered chimney flue.
Hpoe it is that simple, thanks, Pamilyn
When you mentioned your brother sledgehammering the cabinets--made me think, you're sure it isn't a pipe leaking and happens to show up by the chimney? (I was thinking maybe a pipe got jarred enough to leak and it coincidentally is leaking where the chimney is.)
No, checked that out allready..that was my first thought..thanks for your thoughts...Pamilyn...
Have you recently changed heating appliances or added a water heater? Any of these can load up the chimney with condensation due to flue gas condensation. The higher the efficiency of the equipment, the more condensation will occur.
Nope..thanks ...pamilyn
