What is the best way to water proof a second floor deck so that water does not penetrate to the lower level? I am using “I joists” spanning 17 feet, with “1x” t&g for the ceiling below.

3/4" t&g plywood with duaradek on top. You need to have a Duradek dealer install it though.
*Herbie, Check out http://www.hydro-stop.com. They have a latex based waterproofing system that works very well. The one you will need is the premium coat system with traffic coat as your final finish coat. It is low odor, easy to work with, and can be installed by homeowners. If you have a local supplier of this product, they should be able to instruct you in the proper installation. Hope this helps.
*From MackenzieGet a waterproofing contractor who can offer you a guarantee.I wouldn't recommend any timber substrate but instead either 5/8" or3/4" cement sheet( depending on joist spacing ) and make sure to pay attention to any flashings that maybe required.Goodluck.
*Herbie,We use Sealoflex products - like them a lot. From the sounds of it you need Sealoflex CT. It goes over 3/4" t&g plywood. It is elastomeric reinforced with a polyester mesh - 100% adhesion so you don't have to worry about perforations and water traveling as you do with sheet goods. They have an 800 number: (800) 770-5455.I'll see if I can put on an attachment that we use with our customers (builders mostly). They don't necessarily use it all of the time, but it gets me off the hook if they try to cheapen up the deck too much, and it'll give you a good idea of what it takes to have a sound deck.Cliff.
