I have seen several homes with cedar shakes that were laid in a random way pattern. Instead of using a uniform exposure they varied it to create an undulating appearance. I have a couple photos, but don’t know how to attach them.
Does anyone have an idea of how this could be done with another less expensive material than cedar?

One of the older issues of Fine Homebuilding, back cover and maybe a few pages inside. Were some pictures of a guy on a roof that used asphalt shingles in multiple colors, layers ,and exposures to make a wild looking 'thatched' roof.
