WD40-Can you belive it?

DeepCove | Posted in General Discussion on October 2, 2007 01:56am

After complaining about how I hate using bathroom silicone and how messy it can be, my good friend Roger said I should try spraying it with WD40. He said it makes it workable and allows a smooth application job. My usual application is the standard setup with masking tape on either side of the joint  and smoothing the bead with my finger dipped in soapy water. This can still be messy. And if you don’t get it right the first time, chances are it’ll ripple up with a second pass.

So, today the customer wanted one of those cheapy five piece surrounds put in (which can be a pain in itself, but that’s another story). At the silicone app. I decided to give the WD a shot and sure n

, it worked like a hot damn. Even kept my fingers clean. Now, Roger said that there wasn’t any after effects from using it. I can only hope that’s true. But it is a bathtub/shower stall and repeated washing down will, I’m sure, take away any WD residue.

It's also used on arthritis.  I have a friend who puts it on his bum knee.

I actually resorted to spraying it in the small of my back for a week last time my back went out.

didn't do nothing but smell bad ...

and make the wife laugh at me.

maybe a back is more of a cracking problem and kness are more of a squeek?

As you already know, water on silicone doesn't work very well (it does fine on caulk though). For silicone try alcohol (rubbing, Johnnie Walker Blue, or whatever). It smooths it out nicely and leaves no residue.

Please explain how you used it.

On my finger instead of the soapy water.

I use the stuff for most anything. I occasionally shine my shaved head with it and use it for room air freshener.

try this...  before working on a car or truck when you know you'll get covered in black grease... spray it on your hands/arms work it under your nails ect...  you will be easy to clean up after...  same thing if you are use'n spray foam...  works great to get poly caulk off your skin... spray it on your leather work boots... shine your good shoes with it too...

While it has many uses, WD-40 is nothing but kerosene in a spray can. That's genius in marketing.
