I have an opportunity. I have been working on my kitchen and I have easy access to the basement and the cavity of the outside wall.
My wife has wanted a light fixture and outlet outside near the backdoor for a long time, and this is the time.
I have AL siding out there and I don’t know what trim details to look for to install a new box for the fixture or outlet.
I have seen mounting plates at the big box stores that will cover the lap formed into the siding, but it seems to me without a J channel around the opening in the siding, I am inviting the weather into my wall (I have no roof overhang on this west facing exterior wall).
So how do I get from the inside wall cavity to the outer fixture? A remodel box and gasket seem to be in the plans somehow, but I am missing something……
Thanks

Larry - I haven't tried to buy aluminum J channel in a while, but why can't you just get a few feet of colored coil and bend what you need? Or, use vinyl J in the appropriate color. Once you know where the outlet is going, measure carefully for an outside box. Siding is thin. You could cut it with several passes of a utility knife, or use a rotozip, or a circular saw with a fine blade and a lot of care. Obviously, a pair of aviation snips would work too.
Once the properly sized rectangular hole is cut in the siding, and the wire is coming thru the sheathing, cut the J to fit, push it in place and then put your box in. The pressure of the box will hold the J, if you do a good job, and a llittle caulk would be nice too. A couple screws in the back of the box, hook up the wires to the GFI and you're done.
Luck to you - and turn off the juice first.
