We are building a solar home of masonry and steel.Our roof is held in place using steel web joists.
We were told that these steel joists should only be welded at one end.This allows the other end to move when temperature differences occur.Can anyone confirm this ?
Thanks;

All of my experience with steel joists, we call them Bar Joists here, has been in the comercial field. And every steel to steel connection was welded and the welds had to meet specific codes that I don't remember.
When they were bearing on concrete or block I do remenber that each end had to have two 1/2" or larger bolts anchoring the joist to the wall.
Give a steel fabricator in your area a call. They should be more up to date on codes in your part of the country.

Mr. Rosendale;
Thanks for your response;I will research this further from what you have told us.

Don: We have used bar joist on many commerical jobs over the years. We have always been required to fasten both ends to the bearing material. Bolts, welds or anchors cast into concrete. The method depends upon the material in use & the engineers preference. In all cases the attachment method has been substantial. I would agree with the previous post. Get a professional opinion or check with the steel supplier.
