we’re a step closer to building our new house. I’ve been looking through all those magazines, ..250 small house plans.. etc. When the time comes, we’ll get a local architect to do the plans, but I’m trying to get ideas. What are the things that really eat up money that you, as builders, find frivolous? What things do you guys look at, shake your head, and say, “well, it’s their money.” Some of the plans have half-a-dozen direction changes in the foundation, rather than a simple rectangle. Does that cost extra… seems to me it would take longer to frame the foundation, put up the walls, and do the exterior finish with all those short walls. I looked at one plan that is a modified ‘V’ if you looked at it from above. Is that shape expensive? (Gives more south wall for solar gain.) Tray ceilings sound like an idea I can live without. I don’t want to be cheap, I just want to put the money into extra insulation, tin roof, hardwood floors. We have no intentions of selling this house until the kids put us into an old age home. TIA for any tips you might have.
