What brand of Jointer is this

lettusbee | Posted in Tools for Home Building on November 21, 2008 10:10am

Can anybody tell what brand of Jointer this is.

http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/tls/928417220.html

Even at $80, I don’t want no stinky Harbor Freight Pile-o-junk

They aren’t answering the phone, but if it’s HF, I’ll quit thinkin bout it.  If it’s a good brand, I am going to be more persistent in contacting him.

Thanks,

David

I can tell you what it's NOT.

It's not jet, powermatic, delta or grizzly.

My guess would be Palmgren. That's their color.

    1. dovetail97128 | Nov 21, 2008 11:34pm | #2

Possibly a Jet. They started out with a Blue color on their tools. I own one of the "Blue" Jet cabinet table saws

Could be....I've only seen the Jet white ones.

Here's a jet, but the logos would have to have been removed. Looks like a good match, tho.

        This is a JET JJ-6CS 6"x46"

see how the adjustment wheel on that ar on the side instead of tucked up under the feed and out tables?
Definitely not a Jet. I'm thinking Reliant more and more.

Doesn't really look like a Jet to me. Colour is off and I don't think their beds are as long. Reminds me of the brand Woodworker's Hardware used to import that had a sickly greeenish tone to it like that.not saying there is anything wrong with it, but just doesn't look like Jet to me.

    Might be a York.

Almost sure it's a Jet. I have a Jet identical to that one. The only thing I don't see on the one for sale is a removal gauge on the infeed table. It's a very good machine. About $500 new.

Seems like a remember a Reliant brand in a similar color. An import for sure, but thats not always bad.

Looks like a Powermatic 50 clone. For $80, don't know how wrong you could go, but if the tables aren't flat and parallel, a jointer is sorta useless for any precision work.

Everything will be okay in the end.  If it's not okay, it's not the end.

    1. Piffin | Nov 22, 2008 10:52pm | #20

Yep - Reliant has that colour.

Well someone got a deal.   I finally got a response at the phone number, and it has of course, been sold.

Thanks to all involved.  I never knew there were so many brands out there besides the powermatics, jets, deltas, etc.

          Til next time,

          David

Yeah, I was wrong. I had an 8" Jet and it was so close, I spoke too soon.

I do know that back in the 80's there was ( may still be) a co. called 'Elepahnt Machinery' and they were in Taiwan, not "China" per se. And at that time, Grizzly, Jet, Buffalo, and at least 2 other names were all produced at Elephant and just minor paint schemes and little details like the allen screws on the bandsaw blade guides, vs. Hex head, vs. thumb screws.  The give away was the actual casting defects and the knobs on the blade cover doors.  They had purchased the molds from Rockwell/Delta when they were out of tolerance for Delta to pass inspection. Then kept using them and selling cheap copies.

I was in and out of many shops in various capacities, sometimes selling sprayers and WB finishes, sometimes an employee, sometimes just hanging out and helping other buddies..I was amazed at the bandsaws all being identical.

Jointers were also cloned and rebranded under many names too..change the table adjustment to a lever vs a crank wheel and put your name on it.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I am kind of like that on people. Can't remember the names, but the faces I don't forget.

You might be glad you missed it. I remember reading an article comparing various jointers a few years back, and alignment was one of the major issues with the cheaper ones.

I will always wonder.  The more highly regarded brands are always available used around here, I just never seem to have enough $400.00 bills lying round to spend on one of those.

And since a jointer like that woud be noticeable in the garage, I would definitely have to justify it to you know who.  (The lady of the house who thinks garages are for vehicle storage)

I did check out FWW jointer reviews, and based on that, thought I might go for it.

Oh Well.  My karma says to wait, there is a well cared for vintage unit out there somewhere, with my name on it.

I live in Ft Collins if you want anything. I could go look at it if you like. I have a small jointer so i know a little bit about them.

i could go throw rock at his house until he wakes up. Then....

      Thanks for the offer,

I've left a message, we'll see.  If it's a Jet, I'd be sad to missit.  If it's a Sunhill, I'd maybe get it, but wouldn't cry if I missed it.

The sunhill picture seems to be the best match.

Most probably a Jet. $80.00 ,if you need a jointer, buy it.

I have one just like it. It is a Sunhill. It's a good deal for $80.

Sunhill, Reliant and a whole bunch more are all made by the same company. For $80 it's a steal. Jointers aren't very complicated machines. I own a Reliant and it has been a good machine. I Couldn't live without a jointer.
