Our Carnegie Library building of the ‘Craftsman/Arts&Craft’ (1916) style has stairs leading ‘up to knowledge’ as Andrew Carnegie required – between the hand rail and steps there are boards with cut-outs – if they were turned, I’d call them spindles (prhaps incorrectly) – what do you call these boards?
