Just hung a 6-panel masonite door today, boy did it end up pissing me off. It was prehung but the jamb only extended 1/8″ past the door. Now I have to cut the bottom, guess what the filler was only 1/2″ high now I have to go get a piece of 5/4 to fill it in. What happened to the doors that had a 4″ filler at the bottom you could cut to your hearts content. While I was back at the yard I checked to make sure I didn’t get a mistake but they were all the same (jamb length). Just another cheapening of things that makes remodeling harder and harder every year.
Thank you for letting me rant!

Andy.....PS... You know that you can buy the colonist doors pre hung and SOLID for not much more money than hollow by the way. Sounds way better when you shut it! Spose that gets back to my thread about cheaping out....
In his first interview since the stroke, Ram Dass, 66, spoke with great difficulty about how his brush with death has changed his ideas about aging, and how the recent loss of two old friends, Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg, has convinced him that now, more than ever, is the time to ``Be Here Now.''

Ya, but it is still a cheap door, and the hinge screws don't hold worth a damn.

You can get either mdf or particle board core, and neither will hold the standard lil hinge screws very well, the mdf is the worst.
And besides, I don't like them any better, they are way too heavy. ;-)
they are way too heavy
You can say that again!.
Excellence is its own reward!
I never saw a hollow door with 4" of filler, but you don't have to special order a piece to fix this after the cut. Either clean up the piece you cut off, or rip whatever you have handy to fill the bottom.
The short jambs are so they fit into rough openings framed 2" over, ;-)
last I knew the jamb was 81" + the 5/8" head jamb = 81 5/8"
this was 80 1/8" +
We've been having similar problems with doors. Filler strips are too small, doors are twisting like crazy, I've seen doors bow as much as 3/4" from top to bottom. So we started sending them back, and when the replacements didn't look much better, we sent them back too. Our supplier dealt with the manufacturer and lately the doors have improved. The last hollow core doors I cut the bottom off of had a 2" filler instead of the usual 3/4". Maybe they're starting to listen.
I know this doesn't help you much, but I just wanted to rant.
Thanks

I suspect that the door you purchased was assembled incorrectly/poorly. The jamb stock is usually cut from 14 foot stock which when cut in half give you two 7 foot pieces for a 6'8" door.
I would try to find a local supplier who assembles doors. If you watch the assembly process, it takes about 5 minutes to assemble a door at a cost of a few dollars. That being drilling, milling, router the hinges, beveling the edge if you so desire.
If you find a local supplier they will assemble the door any way you want.
