What makes a good faucet?

MnDel | Posted in General Discussion on December 2, 2006 10:57am

We will be installing a roman tub faucet (deck mounted). I also want the hand held shower attachment with it.

I would like to know what are important features to look for – ie. quality mechanism and ease of installation. (We, as homeowners, will try to install this ourselves, if possible.)

Any suggestions of quality brands, makes and models would be very helpful (if that is allowed on this forum). I don’t want anything extra fancy or too pricey – just good function.

When you say "brass" I'm assuming that you mean the finish , not the base material.“It so happens that everything that is stupid is not unconstitutional.” —Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia

        yes

When it comes to brands opinions are far more likely than facts.

I'm assuming this is a retrofit, so a 3/4" tub filler will not get all the flow it was made for with 1/2" pipes feeding it.

Although a 3/4" filler will allow more flow than a 1/2" one will.

When it comes to tub fillers I want to put as much water in the tub as fast as possible.

Hand showers are great, look for one that has a pressure actuated diverter that defaults to the spout when the water is shut off.

If you have a manual diverter you will have to install a backflow device to protect the potable water from the tub water. A vacum breaker or an inline double check will do to meet code requirements.

OK for brands I like these 3 : Kohler, Grohe, & Delta. All have a good reputation, & as of 5 yrs ago Grohe parts have been easier to get.

Your ideas are much appreciated. This is new construction, so no plumbing or water lines are installed yet. This will be mounted on the deck of a whirlpool bathtub, so the spout will have to have a pretty good reach. What did the person mean that said "no rust".?

Not sure exactly on the no-rust comment, other than make sure there is no iron pipe or fittings or the water will be rusty comming out & will stain any tub.

Carefull with deck mount fillers & tall lipped tubs there needs to be a 1" air gap between the spout opening & the flood level of the tub.

I'm just wrapping up the last condo of a 145 unit 42 story condo & this was our building standard for tub filler with hand shower.

no rust means the exterior will not rust.get one that rotates too

          1. MnDel | Dec 03, 2006 02:29am | #8

Rotating would be great - but who makes that style? I have not found that option anywhere.

My home is 9.5 years old. I have both Moen and Delta fixtures. The "brass finish" on both is warrantted for life. I had a minor blemish after 9 years on the Moen. Called the 800#, explained I built the house 9 years ago so had no "paperwork". No problem, had the replacement part in 3 days, no charge.

Same happened with Delta. Both great!!!!
