I’ve been out of the construction field for quite sometime. I’m just thinking about coming back in and I’m reading about all the exciting new tools and materials. I haven’t been this excited since I clicked on the mature adult section on ebay. I’ve been reading your comments on fiber cement siding. Living in the Midwest everyone is wants to have plastic siding put up so that they don’t have to have their house painted again. Now you want them to put up cement siding so they will have to paint their house again. What’s wrong with this picture? Am I missing something? The customer is looking for maintenance free siding. Now add in the additional cost of painting. I’m as confused as Gary Condit. All comments are welcomed. Thanks Steve. P.S. I have not figured out how to use this forum yet. Maybe a couple of years.

Dang ! I thought this was going to be another discussion about velvet oils.
*used the wrong picture, no bra throwing here.
*evets, tho maybe not enough time has passed yet, I think the hope is, it lasts better than asbestos siding and so will the paint. Color would be the reason to change it. With no peeling, no scraping. Not that hard to apply the paint. Preps the killer.
*Also the cost of re siding in in 20+ years as the siding cracks from rocks kids and balls and sticks, fades from UV etc.
*I'd much rather have concrete on my house than plastic. After a year, no problems. And, the fire insurance is cheaper, too. Call me back after Mrs. 'Snort decides to change the colour, bet I'll be a real happy pappy then...
*I think it boils down to what the customer wants. I've had vinyl on my house for 10 years now and it still looks good . It has one dime size hole in it from my son shooting it with a BBgun at 20 below , but other than that it has held up nicely.
*OK next time I will have my wife take her bra off for everyone. But first if someone has wood lap siding on their house and they are tired of paying someone to strip and paint it, what are some of the advantages of the cement siding verses the plastic siding. I know that plastic siding looks like crap, but is this the best when it come to maintenance free living? Speaking of lap siding, its time for my lap dance. Got to go.
*I told you that it will take a couple years to figure this forum out. I'm I suppose to click on reply or the new message button. Thanks for your help. also how do I put a sentence under my name?
*evets,Go to "preferences". You can add what you want there.I bought my house because it has alumninum siding on the gables. No paint for me my friend.Ed.
*To reply to a specific message, hit the reply button. To reply as a general reply to the main message, go down to the bottom and make a new message.I told you how to do a tagline in another post where I answered a couple of your other questions.Find the 'preference' button. Hit that button. Under 'personal information' you will see the heading... "Second line of information (optional):"What you write in that field will become your tagline, under your name.Hope this helps.
*You want "maintenance free"? Rent an apartment, you won't even have to mow the lawn.
*Heh heh, I like that one.James DuHamel
*Jim beat me to it.Every now and again I get a home inspection client who stops me as we're going around the house and I'm pointing out maintenance items: "My realtor told me this is a maintenance free house!"My response is usually along the lines of "There is no such thing as a maintenance free house, but you can get a contract with the easter bunny to do your maintenance for you when you aren't looking. Your realtor can line that up for you."Short term (less than the life of the vinyl siding) vinyl siding has anything else beat, hands down, for a strict economic analysis point of view.Long term, wood that's well maintained and painted has the proven track record. Fiber cement mighty bet wood, but at this point we don't know how long it'll last.BTW, you can paint vinyl siding: they did it to a house down the road from me last spring. Drop me a note in a few years and I'll tell you how it's holding up.
*How about stucco? The vast majority of residential construction here in LA is stucco. its weakest link seems to be the tar paper they put it over in the old days. When that breaks down, the framing gets wet and rots and the stucco loses its support.Of course the relative lifespan of materials will depend a lot on where the building is. Wood does well in climates that are cold enough to be termite free, and less well as you get nearer to the equator. Wood siding is very rare here for that reason. -- J.S.
*Thanks again Luka and GACC. XJohn you ar right. When I lived in the LA area I thought that every home was made of stucco. Just the opposite here in the Midwest. I thought it was from the cheap but good mason labor. Crazy legs when I lived in a condo out in LA I had my stereo stoled from my car, two cars/truck stolen and our condo was broken into. No more. I do mostly interior work, but just gathering information if clients wants some exterior work done. Like I said, I've been out of it for about 7-8 years now. But, excited about the new tools and materials that have come out. or I might of never come back. Opening a restaurant was my second choice. Thanks for all the imput. Steve
*Now here's the question all this raises for me - should I jump on the bandwagon and cover my house now since this new technology is obviously still finding a footing and will be underpriced or is the market already over priced since this is new and flashy, and then I'll be stuck with peeling siding 5 yrs from now??
*I think your right Paddle. I read some articles in JLC over the weekend. I think I need to wait.
