What to apply to old 1800’s barn beams
my husband and I are remodeling a 1800’s farm home . After exposing the beautiful rough cut barn beams I’d like to get them cleaned up and seal with something that would help keep them clean but not change there color .
any suggestions as to what can be used.

Water based poly. Do not use oil or hard wax as it will add quite a bit of color, especially in rough grain. Water based are clear, but will have a very slight whitening effect sometimes. The more flat the finish the greater the chance of whitening. I actually like the look of matte water based poly on reclaimed wood the best. Try it on a test area first. If you find that it is too white (probably won’t) try applying gloss first and matte on top of that. The flattening agents in the matte sometimes stick to the rough grain and make it look white. If you use gloss first it seals the grain and flattening agents don’t stick as easily and spread out uniformly with brushing. Clean w/ acetone to remove surface oils first.
