What to use to finish pine interior p…

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should use as a finish on some white pine v-match T&G paneling at my cabin? I am leery of polyurethane due to its tendency to yellow. Anyone use Sikkens? Other varnishes? Thanks for any suggestions!

Water-based polyurethane won't yellow, though it could raise the grain on the paneling. Nothing wrong with polymerized (tung or linseed) oil or regular varnish. Were it me, I'd go for whatever could be wiped on.

    Jim,

I paneled my den with White Pine T&G "V" siding also. I too wanted mine to stay natural looking.

I used a product called WATERLOX. Its made from Tung oil, but has petroleum products added in with it. Waterlox comes in different finishes; including a hard coat, gym floor finish, which is very glossy. I opted for the regular satin finish.

You simply wipe this stuff on and in a few minutes, wipe off the excess. A gallon of this stuff costs $20 to $25. Its not supposed to yellow (mine was done a year ago, no yellowing to date), and its coverage is between 300 to 500 square feet.

The major drawback is that you need to put on a minimum of 3 coats to "build up" the finish. The more coats you add, the better it looks. Because this stuff has petrols in it, it smells like oil base paint, and the fumes will linger for days. You must ventilate as best as possible.

Waterlox is manufactured by Waterlox Coatings of Cleveland, Ohio. Not every place carries this stuff. By the way, almost all basketball gym courts that I know of are finished with the Waterlox gym floor finish. It does hold up.

I've also just started using Helmsman Spar Urethane by Minwax. Its your typical polyurethane and goes on like all the others. Supposedly, it being a "spar varnish", it will not fade or discolor from UV ray activity. It does darken the wood slightly, but not too much; and it too is not supposed to yellow. I used this on some bookcases and shelving, but these are not yet a year old, so hard to say if perhaps later they will or will not fade.

Hope this info helps. I'm sure there are other finishes out there (such as lacquer based products) that will probably do as nice or better a job. Perhaps someone will give you some info on that stuff as well.

    Good luck,

    Davo304

I have had real good results using "Profin" by Daly's on Ponderosa Pine. It is kind of between a wipe on-wipe off oil finish and a urethane. Doesn't yellow the wood but does allow it to get honey colored when exposed to sunlight. Very natural looking, but protects well too. - jb

*Jim if you have not done it yet, where I grew up there was a lot of pine panneling, they used it for walls, cabinets, closets, everything.real olt time cottages, and the old timers used shellac, won't yellow, and I think ages well.
