What tool for this roofing problem???

| Posted in General Discussion on November 28, 2001 09:38am

What tool would work for cutting about 1/2 to 3/4 inch off bottom of cedar vertical siding at sidewall or headwall on a reroof job. This is to be able to slip new flashing under siding and to go to a thicker dimensional shingle instead of a 3 tab. The existing roof is three tab and will be torn off. The idea is to tear off old shingles and then use a tool with the plywood deck as a guide to cut. I can’t think of a tool. A circular saw would cut at least a inch and a quarter. And would not let me get up in the corner. The existing siding is pressed down on top of the old shingles and needs to be cut off some but neatly. This story and half house has at least 60 ft. sidewall and 35 ft. headwall. I’m sure you roofers have run into this. Thanks for any help on a tool.

A jamb saw might do it if you're careful. Also some of the cordless circular saws have a small enough base for a closer clearance. I'd recommend cutting it back 6" and running a 1X6 cedar up the roof with z-flashing on top. This will allow plenty of room to properly step flash it. And the next guy who has the same problem will appreciate it.

*I'd use a utility knife with a sharp blade or ten

*I would go with the jambs saw idea. Maybe lay a 6" strip of 1/4" ply to even out the iregularities on the shingels and run the jamb saw on it.

*Maybe cut up higher , say 3 1/4" . Reroof and flash then cover with a new 1x4 over flashing. This will make sure flashing stays put and next time its much easier to flash.

*Tony, my Makita sidewinder will cut exactly 5/8" off every time. I have done it many times. I simply lay the saw on it's side and whack away. The cut fits the roof exactly and is very easy to do. In fact, I can do it blindfolded. Start at the top, and let gravity pull your saw down.Oh yeah, I should tell you: you have to booger your saw first....I "customize" mine immediatly out of the box. blue

*Blue, what do you do to your saw? cut off some of the base? I " customize " my makita planer, but that's another thread.

*Actually I did something similar to what Blue is talking about, but at a diminished cost. I just bought one of those "disposable" $24.99 K-mart skil-saws and cut part of the table off. somehow I just feel better about butchering one of those instead of a good one. You'd be suprised at the number of horrible saw-destroying uses you find for a saw when you really don't care if you hurt it. Particularly doing demo-work.
