Alan,
The type of sheathing is dependent on the type of metal roof. If the material is to be a standing seam then skip sheathing works as you can adjust your nailing pattern as needed; however, if you are using a high end corrugated panel then you will have to use the holes supplied in the panel. You could use skip sheathing but your lay out better be perfect. Plywood offers some anti rack strength so use the appropriate bracing if you use skip sheathing.
*The obvious advantage would be cost. You could get rough cut 1x for alot less than OSB or CDX. Also the pitch of your roof , I would much rather do a 12/12 roof on skip sheeting than OSB or CDX. When you use the skip sheeting you have to paper(vertically) as you roof otherwise you risk stepping thru the paper. I would cut my paper to length until the roll is manageable for you. Run out just enough paper to lay a sheet of roofing down and to get at least a 6" lap If you are using the exposed fastener roofing then only predrill enough sheets for one side of your roof , sometimes the holes won't line up on the other side. Hope this helps, Dave
