whats up with this senco combo kit?
So I have begun to look for a 15 guage finish nailer and compressor, (gave up on the cordless idea) and I saw this kit at home despot
but, there are problems:
a) I dont trust the big orange box.
b) It is listed as a special buy, and in the outdoor industry a special buy is an item that is made at a lower cost, with slightly lower quality materials (smaller gauge zipper on tents, heavier insulation in a sleeping bag, fiberglass tent poles instead of aluminum etc)
So is it the real deal?
Why is so cheap?

The Senco's that HD sells are not necessarily there contractor series, they may sell the contractor series, however I haven't seen them there.
Watch the model no.s
These guns are ok but they are more like the diy'er models.
I found a set and took it home, and being the science teacher/troublemaker that I am, I quickly dissected them and heres what I discovered
1) only the 15 guage angle nailer has a quick release nose piece, the other two guns have to be unscrewed.
2) the depth adjusment on all of them is a small unfriendly thumb screw.
My current hypothesis is that Senco sold them cheap to the Despot because they are releasing oil free finish nailers. I am going to try to call senco on Monday and find out from them....
Sad thing is that I still dont know what compressor I want, so the whole kit is a massive paperweight...

My current hypothesis is that Senco sold them cheap to the Despot because they are releasing oil free finish nailers.
Explain this please.
Senco's contractor nailers are oil free. There home owner versions are the ones you oil.
Senco used to make Accuset, which was not the same quality as there Senco brand guns. They discontinued the Accuset and now make a home owner version with their own name on them.
You also mentioned the nose pieces that have screws, that's the way all the Accusets were. Basically they just painted the Accuset grey and put Senco on them.

I was on the senco website and saw that some of the nailers feature "neverlube" technology like this
http://www.senco.com/con_rem/results2.asp?ToolID=155&type=tool
and this
http://www.senco.com/con_rem/results2.asp?ToolID=152&type=tool
Back when I was younger and dumber I always jumped on bargains, but now I am much more wary, and I have the reciept sitting on the package.
The finishpro 35 (in the kit) has a quick release front nose piece that does take a good deal of force to pop open to clear jams, the smaller 18 guage nailer and 18 guage stapler do NOT have quick release fronts, and I also imagine that they will tend to jam more with the smaller diameter nails coming out...
I will be able to report more once I finally find an air compressor that is the right balance of size, weight, performace and price....

I went to the Senco web site, the finish pro 35 is not their "pro line" its the cheaper version.
http://www.senco.com/products/xpro/finish_nailers_results.asp?type=model&strID=155&level=2
try this one, its the pro version, I have the old sfn40, dont think its made anymore. I think the one I linked is the replacement.
One thing that you can look for in the new Senco's is that if it is oil-less it's probably their pro style. I dont know if that's a hard and fast rule but it does seem to apply to all the Sencos that I have and those of others that I know.

I was on e-bay and found it, thats the pro series.

I talked with Senco today, and they said that the kit is packaged up for diy/light contractor use, so I am going to return it and keep my eyes peeled for a SX41 Pro, which senco said is a much better gun....
Probably way more gun than I ever will need, but anytime I have purchased a better tool, I have not regretted it.
I got to ebay too late to score the gun you linked to, but I did find a Thomas 635hd compressor for 132 shipped to my door...
Now I just need some hoses and guns!
J
keep your eye on e-bay, you can find a lot of sfn40 and the sx41 on there.
the sfn has been around for a while and is a damn good gun. I have had one forever and have had no problems what-so-ever with it. I believe the sfn is discontinued but its still one hell of a gun, and readily available.
Doug
Do you know why Sencos have that quick jam release? Because they get jammed alot.
I use to have to fix about five jams per day, while my partner Forest never had a jam in his paslode for two years!
When I blew the senco apart, I bought a Paslode....never jammed either!
My hitachi nevers jams either.
I don't buy Senco anymore.

That may be the case for framing guns. I too prefer Paslode for framing. For finish guns, however, I think Senco is hard to beat and probably the industry standard. I have never, in tens of thousands of shots from SFN40s, FX41Ps, and whatever the 18 gauge pinners are, had a single jam except as a result of hitting screws.
Now that you mention it Jesse, I have a SENCO finish gun. I've never jammed it either. Its an old one. I haven't shot that many though.

gotta be operator trouble..
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
paslode for framing ...
senco for finish.
oil's for framing ...
oilless for finish.
Yer getting outta framing ... so I thot U should know such things ...
Just trying to help ....
Jeff
Jeff, Im just old and old fashioned.
I am thinkingthat the $77 compressor should be a staple in every man's truck. It would be very handy for service.

here's another tip ..
I have a Delta chop saw ... 8.5 inch blade ..
from Lowes ... got it for $80.
weighs nothing ... easily one hand held over the head ...
so crappy ... doesn't even have a lock nut for a handle!
But it'll cut paint grade base in an attic conversion all day long!
I call it ... my "throw away" ...
if I ever have to set up a perp for a trim job gone bad ... I'll just kill him and stick it in his sock ..
Jeff
I know I'm thick, and I'm being kind 'cause I'm talking about myself, but where does Senco come into any of this?...I'm a Senco fan as a professional user..hip me please... Don't worry, we can fix that later!
