I’m trying to get some drawings through the building department. I showed the foundation drain around the perimeter without completing the thought…Where does in go? The building inspector/plan checker would like to see it go to the street gutter but it would have to go uphill to accomplish that. the site is relatively flat and the building is some 80 odd feet fro the street (it’s a granny unit). I’ve heard of running drain pipe to “falls” but my recollection on this matter is real shaky. What are some alternate strategies to dealing with getting water away from the foundation? There doesn’t appear to be a lot of settlement issues with adjacent properties but we’re here in Northern California with a lot of clay content in most soils. Any help is appreciated.

mike.. there are 3 basic choices....all involve gravity..
you can drain to daylight...
you can drain to a sump , and pump it up hill..
or, you can drain to a dry well or galley system with enough capacity to handle all your runoff in a 100 year storm......clay soils and bad perc. rates restrict this choice...
any restriction in any of these systems will be overwhelmed if you don't design for handling the worst case storm....even the drain to daylight.. in other words , don't try to pipe off with 2"....
*Thanks a lot Mike. I like the simplicity of the last one. Especially when the existing building that we're adding to is turn of the century (the last one) and doesn't seem to have any problems without these considerations. But I sure would like to upgrade things.
