Which vented gas fireplace to get?

| Posted in General Discussion on October 3, 2000 06:48am

We have a 20 year old wood frame , aluminum sided colonial house out side of hilly. The living room is 13×16. In the center of the 13 foot wall, which is an exterior wall, we want to place a vented gas fireplace. We plan on building book shelves and window seats on each side of the fireplace with a surround. The whole wall, surround etc. will be built-in and painted white, crown molding etc.

We have gone to several dealers in the area and they all tell us that their products are the best. Its very confusing. We will build the bookshelves, window seat, surround ourselves.

We need Break time’s advice and recommendation as to which vented gas fireplace to purchase. A particular brand and model would be appreciated. We have done a lot of remodeling work but never a gas fireplace. Once we decide on one we will have the dealer install it and the gas company will hook it up.

Thanking you in advance for all of your recommendations.

This may not be the forum to ask about a gas fireplace. These things are installed by the fireplace dealer or one of their subs. Been in a few homes so I have some comments. Check out the availability of service. It is a pain to the homeowner to purchase something based on price alone. The heating contractor I deal with does not service everything as his reputation is on the line. Same goes for the fireplace dealers. Most fireplace retrofits are in kit form today. The problem in installation occurs when the wall is opened and framing is not as expected. These things are often installed by employees who have little building experience. Have seen jobs that took three days instead of the expected one day. You are in a different situation where you can control the situation should problems arise. I cannot tell a plumber how to do his job nor can he tell me how to do mine. Have never heard of any fireplace brands being better than others. Good luck.

    Ken-Pat,

Tho not the definitive source of information, the folks at http://hearth.com may be of some help. Follow the links to their Forum and ask away.

Try travis industries. I chose the 36" Fireplace Extrordinaire. All of their products are excellent. Good luck.

*My wife and I are big fans of Vermont Castings Products. We have two of their wood burning stoves for over five years and are very satisfied. We will be purchasing a gas model soon for a commercial space. Look up their Web site.
