White vs gray thinset

| Posted in General Discussion on April 15, 2004 07:22am

What’s the diff in white & gray thinset?  I know white has to be used for certain stones, but is there any performance differences?  And did I ask this same question not too long ago?  My mind escapes me sometimes…

Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell’em “Certainly, I can!”  Then get busy and find out how to do it.  T. Roosevelt

It went by a few minutes ago... Had I known it was yours I'd snaged it till you could have come by for it.

Performance doesn't seem to be any different between the two. White, I think is smoother and costs more. White is generally used on porous stone and tile.

USe white when using white marble as the color bleeds through as it does with limestone.

Its also easier to use darker colors on dark tiles in case some oozes out .

No diference as long as youre talking thinset to thin set not thin set to mastic which is white also. Then there is a difference.

Maybe its a manufacturer or regional thing but all Ive seen is white mastic. Im not doubting ya bro.  the only reason I brought mastic up was to make sure we (Ed the guy asking the Q and folks giving the answers) were on the same page. its hard over the net. Thats all.

What in the world are you crying about? Give ya yellow mastic which is gotta be more than white. It must take an additive or something to get yellow.

Now the white mastic users are gonna havta revolt 'cause they are being shorted....

Will your grout be light or dark?  Use white thinset with a lighter grout and gray thinset with a darker grout.  That way the thinset that comes up between the tiles and that you missed when doing your cleanup (it will happen) won't be as prone to show through the areas where you have thin grout coverage over the thinset.

The white is used more frequently on walls with a lighter grout, but it's not a big deal either way.

No difference except the color. White thinset for light tiles; grey thinset for dark tiles. White is $2 more per bag. Don't know why.

            Regards,

            dieselpig-funny!

i use white for light grouts, grey for darker grouts. don't know if it matters or i've simply convinced myself that it does.

On some thin white or light marbles the gray may bleed thru.Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming....                                        WOW!!!   What a Ride!
