Anybody familiar with whole house fans? Are they worth it and what is the difference between the direct drive and belt drive units. (besides one being direct drive and the other being belt driven)

We have had them in several houses and ended up not using them after having central a/c. Unless you live in a nice fairly dry, dust/pollen-free area they seem like a bad idea in today's allergy-prone world. My in-laws open their windows at night but it is so humid the poor a/c seems to not be effective until late in the day. Fresh air is great but most places the pollen or humidity keeps it from being fresh. The heat loss from the fan area is quite large unless you go to great measures to cover it up if you have cold winters. If covered it is kind of a pain to uncover.
The belt drives are generally quieter than direct.
Just my opinion.
I have one and love it.
But I also have AC.
A lot depends on YOUR climate and if you have allergies.
I just turned the AC on last week when the humidity started going up (KC, MO) and the night time temps say above 70. And will probably run it until early Sept.
But for much of May and June and Sept and maybe a bit of Oct I will use the fan.
The belt drive units are quieter.
If you live in Piffin land that is proably all you need. If you live in the FL swaps, don't even bother with the fan.
I also have one. Love it - but I have an old home w/ AC downstairs and not up. I did have to make a custom enclosure for the winter and when not in use. Not pretty but functional.
It will make your screens dirty as it tries to suck in the dust/bugs/etc from outside. I never notice the dust or debris but I live w/ 4 kids.
Since we run it at night, I like the louder fan. Acts as white noise.
