I was talkin to/giving a hard time to SYSOP over in the SandBox on a recent thread about “Mystery Guests”. Turns out Taunton is thinking about having a famous chef stop in over at Cook’s talk, and setting the threads up so you can “ask the expert”, and only the “expert” can reply to you.
See the whole thread here:Guest Thread
In the last post or 2, the question came up of whom would we like to see answer questions in Breaktime? Norm Abrams? Tom Silva? Bob (gasp) Vila? Tim Taylor?
I tried for Pamela Anderson – Maybe she could stop in and re-create some pics like the infamous “My New Helper” pic. But the SYSOP didn’t seem to excited about that.
Any thoughts?

about the lady from Hometime, she purity.
how about Tim Allen, Jay Leno :-)
Jay Leno ???
I think they were hoping for someone who actually KNEW something - A knowledeable building industry expert.
Like Pamela.Sex is a three-letter word that needs some old-fashioned four-letter words to convey its full meaning.
Come on This board isn't in glorious technicolour. You usually open the picture after you've read the words. If the intro doen't grab you, you'll never see the chest, hair and rest of the make-up. BTW if Taunton are after a visually exciting expert, surely one of the TV DIY shows would agree to lend their resident "chest".
How do these sound as titles for a thread
"Baths with Pamela Anderson" "Guest couches with Jay Leno"
NORM....THE Master Carpenter yeehaaamakinsawdust
No, no, no, no! Not Pamela, but some equally famous and far more mentally stimulating Fine Homebuilding author. Name some names, and I might well be able to arrange an appearance.
Andy Engel, The Former Accidental Moderator
George Nash or Larry Haun. Let the thunder crack and the waves roar.
We're going on.
Richard Carpenter.
Was gonna ask for Karen, cause she was cuter, but it'd be hard to arrange that appearance.
There we go, that's the kind of suggestion I'm after. Andy Engel, The Former Accidental Moderator
I was wondering if George Nash was still active in the trades?
Love his book on 'Renovating Old Houses'. The photo of he and a helper standing in front of a pile of concete they mixed on flat open ground with just shovels cracks me up.
I believe he thought a house had to really be gone before it wasn't salvagable. Today I saw an old two story slated for demolition with no plans for the lot. Nothing major wrong with it except it had a rotted porch. Let the thunder crack and the waves roar.
We're going on.
Where did I go wrong, Andy?
Can't figure out why they didn't take me seriously...............(-:I'd rather let Stevie Wonder wrap my parachute.
I nominate Andy Adelman, General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety.
He spoke and answered questions at a neighborhood council meeting last Saturday. He's been working hard for the last five years to reform and streamline the old bureaucracy, and he's made a lot of progress. For instance, 99.9% of inspections happen within 24 hours of when you call, and you can pull simple permits via the internet. But he's still looking for ways to make things better.

I take a lousy week off and you're tryin' to replace me already...
I think I'd like to see Bob Villa come here - not for the info but to watch the fireworks.
Gary Katz and Mike Guertin are both readable authors.
John Carrol has already been here.
Surely you're not considering our old friend the stair rail builder?
LOL
Truth be told - I think this place is made not only of the information to be found but in the interchange and point-counterpoint. Breaktime is all of us. I learned something the other day from a non-expert DIY homeowner. I think it was Lisa who mentioned a sure fire way to remove old asphaltic flooring adhesive.
We don' need no stinkin' experts here.

How about Norm & Tommy, between the two of them, they might know almost as much as Piffin:) Really, either would be great. Bob would be pretty humorous.
Brudoggie
Yeah, guess I forgot tommy, to be honest any of the regular guys on the show would be great, minus steve.
i think the idea of peppering a guess with questions, would kinda undo the premise of this forum . if they would like to participate lets say over a months time, and interact, that would pretty kool. but sitting here and watching a tsunami of questions aimed at a "celebrity", just wouldnt do it for me. but that just me......if i had my druthers i'd like to see tom silva, get together with either taunton or rodale press . and see what they could whip up. the format of T.O.H. is a cash cow, and everyone in the wake of that cash cow . makes sheckle's, the only problem that in my opinion is T.O.H dictates the complete show from concept to marketing. it turned in to a generic T.O.H product BORING..... so tom silva with a new driver at the wheel would be interesting...... cheers bear
Id like to see Larry and Joe Haun and or Tom Silva ( with out Norm). If its gonna be about 10PM on a Friday night in the tav then Dean Johnson...:>) hehehehe that'll get the place rocking

I have never posted to other chatrooms or forums - I like this one, because everyone is equal, and one little trick or warning from guys do the work as a profession, rather than the ones that tired of it a long time ago and made a profession out of writing about it is worth my reading time.
Besides, experts are not allowed to be so irreverent and therefore are less entertaining.

HERE HERE!!!!
Seems to me that most of the "Experts" out there have lost thier edge from being away from the real work for to long.
The ONLY way to stay on top of a complex and ever-evolving profession (I started to type 'trade' but that does not do it justice, and that is another topic in itself) like carpentry is to be up to your asss in it every day!
Norm - not since he has been on TV
Boob Vila- was he ever in there?
Steve- Not Hardly
Tommy- This guy has earned his Tool belt IMO He may not do the work as much as the show portrays but I get the feeling has has not let himself forget what it really takes to produce quality work.(I have not been watching regularly for 2-3 years now so things may have changed)
Larry Huan- YES YES YES
Scott Mcbride- Yes
Piffin- He already answers every question asked! But that begs me to ask if he even has time to find his tool belt any more?
;)
Sonny Lykos- My Hero! The only people around here that get 120$ an hour are hookers and Lawyers (both are screwing people out of thier money!)
Oh yeah I think Smitty has real potential here! Intelligent and witty, Easy on the eyes, and loves tools ans woring with her hands, Gotta love her!
Unless she really is a 280# ex marine drill seargent!
Just some that come to mind.

Absolutely my sentiment!
HGTV & the rest are great for relaxation - their shows probably get people that wouldn't have actually thought of doing anything for themselves interested in the first place. I'm an HGTV addict - buuuut, after renovating 5 houses, I'm not looking for the level of advice the shows tend to offer. Its just more appealing to me than watching "Friends" or whatever - I like looking at pretty stuff, and laughing at the ugly stuff.
As for the attributes of presenters suggested, I have a "hottie" right here at home - he is even tempting enough to entice me away from "Modern Masters"
Save some time for the real thing guys - its a lot more satisfying!
The only people around here that get 120$ an hour are hookers and Lawyers (both are screwing people out of thier money!)
A lawyer at $120/hour? May as well go to amateur night at the "gentlemen's club." You can't get any kind of decent screwing by a lawyer for only $120 an hour. Jeez.________________________________________________

OK Bob, Exactly how much did you used to get to screw people when you were young and good looking?
Well, since I never met both of those qualifications at the same time ....
Besides, I worked at the corporate level, not the consumer level; I din't get to screw people, I got to screw corporations and other countries! I achieved a small (very small) measure of fame by figuring out how to US$5 million back from one of the dead beat Latin American countires. Now $5 million was peanuts given the overall size of the debt, and nobody really cared about the amount, it was the fact we were able to trick 'em out of anything that had some bankers dancing!

Did someone mention Bob Vila? Well...how about his sidekick, Riley? Poor ole Riley never did get any respect. Sure would like to know how he can pull his hammer out of his rear pants pocket? I've tried that for fun, but it never worked as smooth for me as it does for Riley.
John Carroll has become famous for working alone....Well if you had Bob Vila for a partner like Riley does, you definately would know how to work alone. Ever notice when there's lifting to be done, Bob leaves the job site? Sorta like Steve Thomas does...only worse.

Although a follower of the Buddhist faith I say get Jesus in here...Wasnt he a carpenter that got "nailed"? Bet that dude has some info for us. If ya can't get him then just get naked chicks with nail aprons on to fullfill our wildest fantasies. Pam IS totally awesome but since I heard she has hepatitus and silicone cans it kinda blows it for me. I just want some hottie here lying to me about she loves us dirty carpenters with rough hands..yeh sure..tell me another one. Bobby Vila can kiss my you know what. Silver rocks and Norm seems like a good drinkin' buddy. Johnny Lennon would be good.you know.the dude that wrote, "Workin Class Hero". Or Jimi...that wrote"Castles Made of Sand". Hey Andy,
Remember, Jesus and Joseph used to go out of town on the wayside and find abandoned and forgotten furniture, bring it back to the carpenter shop and restore it to better than new condition. I think this process was a precurser to His later ministry. You think about that!

Tough call. I think that kind of thing would be better suited for an amateur forum where the questioners have little knowledge. If you put a guy like Norm or Tom Silva in a situation like that it would get side tracked so fast. Even John Carrols threads get off track fast. Too many egos with knowledge here. And I don't mean that in a bad way. On a forum like this that draws guys with knowledge there's too much competition for a good answer. Which is a great thing if your searching for different answers, but bad if you want to go one on one. This is a community think tank so to speak. One guy dishing out his answers only isn't suited for this situation.
Perhaps a possible situation as described could be corrected thru the use of a moderator.
Let the thunder crack and the waves roar.
We're going on.
Edited 11/24/2002 1:59:22 PM ET by rez
Ditto Gunner, I don't know what would be the point.
There isn't a single person that knows everything, but we know where to go when we run out of answers.
So we ask a question, guy 1 says what he thinks, which reminds guy 2 of a better way, which in turn reminds guy 3 that this place isn't what it used to be, guy 4 has a hair for guy 3 and starts something, guy 5 brings humor to it, guy 6 asks a question totally off the wall from the thread, guy 7 mentions how it is all the Republicans fault, guy 8 gets back on track but no one pays attention because guy 9 is sure that it is the Democrats fault, etc., etc..
So, who would I recommend they have for a chat? All of us, and lose the moderator.
Well...uh, yeah. Guess that is how it works.
Don't need any feet to sit at, thanks, most especially if they have a show. If they want to pull up a chair, and join in the conversation, great....love it when that happens. I hate the moderated discussions.cabinetmaker/college instructor. Cape Breton, N.S
Exactly. This is one of the few places where a question about wiring an electrical receptical can turn into an argument about electrical sub stations.
We are bad, but that is why we are good.
I agree. Thats why I asked Andy what he thought .

amen, gunner... i'd stack this bunch up against any one the above named.. and the give & take gets to the heart of the matterMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Like I said in an earlier thread ;" We are a pretty salty crew when we bear down on it" . Lots of joking and argueing about politics and substations alright. I dont really think anyone could come here and do anythig but add to a converstaion and they would be welcome by me to do that . If yall remember Piffins post about all the other carears that are here , its pretty humbling.
Tim Mooney
"If you put a guy like Norm or Tom Silva in a situation like that it would get side tracked so fast. "
Don't know if you guys read the thread I linked to in the Sandbox, but the threads wouldn't get side tracked. What they (Taunton) envision is setting up threads where you could ask the guest a question, but only the guest could respond. Kinda like a "read only" thread.
Here's the link to the thread in the sandbox again:

What would be our reaction to the type person you would ask?
What is your opinion of this group?
Tim Mooney
Larry Haun is an excellent suggestion but how come no one has suggested Ted
Benson yet? ( or did I somehow miss that?)
The group that wrote
Patterns of Home; Max Jacobson, Murray Silverstein, and Barbara Winslow
would be great.
Sarah
Susanka would be great too.
Jim Tolpin would
also be on my list.
I think the current TOH group would be interesting too but let's face it thay
already have their own gig going and I am sure they are way too busy doing all
that anyway.

If this is gonna be across the board(s), I'd like to see Mike Dresdner over at Knots. Nother vote for the Norm here. He's just the kind of guy that would be interesting to hear a perspective from, regardless of peoples notions of him.
Put Joanne Lieberler in spikes and a micro mini and I think that would draw quite a crowd hehehe

Some of those Playboy models would be more than welcome to strut there stuff here IM very sure..<G>
i'd put mirror's on the tips of my redwings for that one..... yup you got my vote...bear
Can't really see why anyone would want TOH folk. As if to say some of the experienced hands that post here wouldn't be able to produce the same given the financial backing to produce such a show. No, let's hear from a lifetime committed framer, stair master, siding king or any specialized field of dedication. A good flooring guy. Let the thunder crack and the waves roar.
We're going on.
I'm with you Rez, though I did see Norm give a lecture about 12 years ago. He was great.....very normal, down to earth. The highlight came at the question and answer session at the end, when first one woman, then another and another asked if they might merely shake his hand...or if they might get a quick kiss. I was rolling! The chicks dig the guy! Good for him!
Seriously, while Norm or Tommy would be fine choices, I would like to see some specialists...as you said, master stair builders, timber framers, guys that make windows and doors...that sort of thing.
I see the problem of a million questions and the poor guy drowning trying to answer 10% of them. Maybe we submit them in advance?
The only problem with the board now isn't the lack of knowledgeable posters, but the random nature of it all.
Jake
Norm without a doubt.
Met him once (in passing) at some tool show in Illinois. Nicest life form you'll meet. If it happens we ought to pool some questions. Probably find him a typist too.
Personally I would really like to see Sarah Susanka here. Do you think you can get her to drop by?Tamara
Is that the lady on Home time ?

you guys have mentioned Norm and Tommy, but not Richard Trethewey (sp?)- I'd like to have him in here too
(On the last ASK TOH he was putting a galvanic isolator on a steel to copper union coming from a boiler. When he went to remove the old, rusted hulk he hooked up his two long pipe wrenches in reverse -i.e., to tighten, not loosen - The next scene it was reveresed. I can believe that they didn't edit it out, or at least show him self-depricatingly laughing it off)Steelkilt Lives!

Hey what about one of theose hotties that are on HGTV .. put them in spikes and a micro and Id crawl out from under my table to see that one..in fact I might take with me.hehehehe

Would love to see norm here, maybe the guy from the woodwright shop, anyone ever seen it, he makes furniture, and he does it from all old hand tools, not really homebuilding, but impressive, but I would not want to see Bob or Steve, Bob is a pimp for sears whichs makes crap anyway and Steve seems like a nice guy but kind of a goof. Just my two cents
I think it's Roy Underhill you're thinking about.
I like his work, but don't think it really fits this forum very well. I'm writing an unauthorized autobiography.
I'd love hearing from Roy Underhill. That guy breaks a sweat as he's doing 1/2 of the stuff he does on the show. He's out of breath and moving like a house-a-fire. Truely a respectable guy.
another vote for larry haun.
or how about jeff taylor, author of tools of the trade... not really an expert, but great anecdotes...
maybe if I'd read through a bit I'd get the guy's name, huh? As far as his expertise being outside the range of this forum, I'm not buying that. Good work is good work, it's just a matter of scale, application of skill, and never being afraid to ask someone whose done it a few more times.
Ah.. Ok, I'm not sure what your talking about, did you mean to address that comment to me, or someone else, not trying to be rude, just confused?

Seeing as I'm such a literalist, maybe I should change my voter registration!
I too have lerned much from Marcus Aurelius:
From his First Meditation:
"I have learned ....
"From my governor, to be neither of the green nor of the blue party at the games in the Circus, nor a partizan either of the Parmularius or the Scutarius at the gladiators' fights.
"From Bob the Inspectorium and grammarian, to refrain from fault-finding, and not in a reproachful way to chide those who uttered any barbarous or solecistic or strange-sounding expression; but dexterously to introduce the very expression which ought to have been used...."

I think we should think outside the construction box here....say, single malt whiskey. I am willing to step up to the plate, having some experience there, and moderate a discussion on that subject. Then how come about a third of your guys subscribe to TOH?Andy Engel, The Former Accidental Moderator
WEll ANdy since when have you guys done anything on OLD homes? I mean 100 year plus? I like TOH cuz they have articles dealing with old homes and restoring etc. I live in a house that is at least 80 years old and more than likely 100 years old. I will have to say we don't subscribe. MIL does and sends it our way. Lars won't give up on his FHB or FWW. They are the two we HAVE to renew no matter what;-0 I can be wrong about you dealing with OLD homes. I have only been reading the mag. for four years. I do agree that you are a step above TOH, but they do have some decent stuff in their for those of us that deal with really old homes. Wonder if Andy C. takes TOH.Tamara
I don't get all the calls to have the TOH or Hometime or whatever gang visit. Aside from the celebrity aspect (where I agree with Adrian that I don't want to sit at any celebrity's feet), what do those guys or girls have to offer that A) you don't already know about them from all their time on TV, and B) you don't have here from people of at least equal expertise. The TOH plumber/heating contractor, for example, seems like a nice guy, but would he provide a level of expertise y'all don't get from David Thomas, Mongo, and several others? And if questions were posed directly to him, how interested would he be in the banter when someone has th inevitable contradictory opinion? Most "celebrities" don't want anyone questioning their expertise; they want to maintain their aura.
Fine by me if these or anyone else wants to visit and chit chat. The more the merrier. And the more knowledge, the better off we all are. But this has always been a community effort, as compared to JLC Online and other "ask the expert" type of forums I've visited. It's a virtual job site, rather than a seminar. And on a board of equals, where reputations are built over a long time based on consistency and quality of advice rather than name recognition, the introduction of celebrity, and its attendant implication that some are more equal than others, can really change that dynamic. Sure, it could be a good Taunton PR opportunity, but it could also muffle some of those who offer great advice here without any fanfare.
How 'bout the article on removing a bearing wall in the last issue? Or on epoxy repairs to exterior trim on the cover of issue 107? Or the article on lead paint in issue 150? We've done articles on stripping paint and fixing rot. Insulating old homes without causing rot. Dealing with old wiring. Matching trim and repairing plaster. Old houses aren't our focus, that's true. But they're a fact of life to any carpenter and so we do try to run some relevent articles. Andy Engel, The Former Accidental Moderator
I stand corrected. Sorry told you I was probably off. Like I said Lars picks tanton mags. over many around. Plus let me tell you we have sunk a few bucks towards books that you all publish etc. I appeciate your hard work! Keep up that great work.Tamara
Didn't mean to rap your knuckles there, Tamara. Hope no offense was taken. Thanks for the business.Andy Engel, The Former Accidental Moderator

To be honest- I wasn't around to send in 'the year for $11' blurb I get from TOH or I would have. That's worth it just to get something interesting in the mail and for the pull out posters for the shop wall. Sheesh! That's almost the cost of two newstand issues of FH. You guys better keep the mag going at full tilt.:)
So when is the first issue of 'FineRenovation' going to hit the stands anyway?
Let the thunder crack and the waves roar.
We're going on.

There was a show on PBS a few years back (okay, maybe it was 15 or so) that had a skinny dude in overalls. Boy, that helps doesn't it! Anyway, he did a lot of really interesting projects and used a lot of hand tools. It was kind of like Norm's show if it was sponsored by the Antiques Roadshow and not Porter Cable. Somehow I like the idea of input from a guy with experince like that. A guy who knows that a brace might not be holding a wall but putting a hole in it.
