Window brands!

Donahrens | Posted in General Discussion on February 19, 2007 06:07am

Hey All! Any reconds on window brands out there? I know Anderson is supposed to be the ‘highest end’ windows, but is this actually true in your experience? What about Harvey, Marvin and Pella? Any real rough guesses on cost for just window replacement (no sashes) for a 2,000 sqft. cape with 3 bdrms. About 14 large windows downstairs, 4 small and 4 large upstairs, 1 small. My neighbor told me she just got an estimate of $45,000!!!! for a similar house for complete replacement. That sounds insane. Thanks.

boy, $45,000.00 sounds reasonable to me, lol! i suppose when you're having windows custom made it's a different deal but of all the manufacturers you listed i like pella's the best. good quality for stock windows.

Boy there's a flurry of misinformation for you...!

Andersen is a premier window company but they are not in the same class of window as Marvin.. Pella is more the same type window as Marvin but not nearly as good.

When you get into replacements, you are in yet another ball game. again, Marvin is prime and one of the first to pioneer that market making custoim sizes. There is no way to tell how to compare your neighbors without more specific information on sizes and the typ of window, styule of house and trim casings, and what else was included.

When buying windows, you are buying a company and the way they back up the product as much as the window itself.

Go to your local Marvin dealer and ask about Marvin tilt-paks.The most superioir replacement option IMO.

Thanks, I will go check them out!

Instead of tilt pacs, I recommend Marvin Ultimate DH insert windows. The tilt pacs can be a little hard to tilt for cleaning, if that is important to you.

I don't know where you live.... but, I would charge $5,000.00 for tearout, install, and exterior wrap in matching coil stock for 22 Marvin Tilt Paks. Your material cost can run the gammitt, depending on what options you may choose.....

We had aluminum clad w/  doug fir interior Loewen windows installed in our house - moved in Jan '05.  A few windows had scratches (rep. found that the nailer applying the trim was responsible), but were replaced under warranty.

Loewen are made in Canada and are one of the few to offer doug fir.

Another vote for Marvin.  The Tilt-Pacs are great.  I'm pretty familiar with most of their line and they're all good.

Big D, check out the "Window Comparison" thread for more information and interesting discussion.

Thanks, where do I find the "winodw comparison" thread?

      1. ruination | Feb 22, 2007 08:09pm | #11

Click on the "General Discussion" banner to fully open and scroll down to "Window comparison".  When I looked a minute ago the date on the right was Feb 21 but may get updated at any time.  Also, don't forget the search engine: Folder "general discussion" from "dreic2208" within the last week.  Have a great weekend.  - ruint
