Howdy to all,
I’d like to install or have installed a few windows in our home. I have building experience from a past life so I have a functional understanding of the process. My problems are two fold. One, we have aluminum siding which I have zero knowledge of and two, there is no shear paneling on the extrerer of our home just 1 ¼ “ blue board. My question is; is this a reasonable undertaking or is this a carpenters nightmare and going to cost more then a working man can afford? Thank you for any input…

Greetings Hales,
as a first time poster, Welcome to Breaktime.
This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again.
Perhaps it will catch someones attention that can help you with advice.

Hell Hales, been about two weeks and you ain't even checked in to see if there was an answer to yer question.
What are you, on vacation or some kind of one hit wonder?

Yah, I have been out of my mind for a couple weeks. I just got back to town today. I'm a little confused... Have there been any posting to my question? And if so where do they reside?
Yes, Hales, there are postings. They exist as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no postings! It would be as dreary as if there were no Hales. There would be no General Discussion then, no Tavern poetry, no Tools For HomeBuilding romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which Breaktime fills the world would be extinguished.
No postings! Thank God! There are and will be forever. A thousand years from now, Hales, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, there will continue to be postings that make glad the heart of construction.
Oh yeah, in case you missed it Woody, Welcome to Breaktime.

Ahh, you ok, man? Sounds like a sermon from 'It's a Wonderful Life', or something.

Just hoping to get first time poster Hales a little bit of attention lest his question falls unknown into the archive abyss.
By him saying extre'there is no shear paneling on the extrerer of our home just 1 ¼ “ blue board.' is he talking about Dow foam board insulation or that funky exterior sheetrock stuff from the 40's?
If he's talking aluminum siding I'm betting it's the latter.

ok
2 ways, well 3 . ok 4,
One is to use the jamber sets that replace the window in a current frame such as the anderson or marvins, designed to go into a wood single or double hung frame
number 2 and 3 are ugly
#2,
here is an ugly answer, from my ugly days working for a low budget window company
first the windows should not be acting as a sheer, although old aluminums often did take a dn distribute loads from above
measure windows to be about 1/4 inch shorter, all directions then current inteior trim
order vinyl windows, cut off nail fins
on old aluminum windows, pull out slider and remove fixed panel ( sometimes it means shatter). Take a sawzall to the frame of the aluminum and collapse the frame, yanking it off the trimmers
slide the new vinyls in and they will slide over the current inside trim a little
attach through the vinyl frame ( in areas of tracks) with stainless steel screws into the side of the trimmer
glue the snot out of the exposed with vulcum.
rip down some lumber to fill any gaps etc on the outside, vulcum, paint and hide
on the inside use a small 1/4 round and attach to the exsisting trim and butt up against the vinyl window hiding any of those gaps
#3
measure the vinyl window to fit just inside of the aluminum frame. Order what is called a brick mold vinyl fin window,
remove glass and ceter window support, leave rest of aluminum frame in place
slide new one in over the old frame, screw through sides of vinyl and into the aluminum frame , again , glue the snot out of it. This style of vinylw window is actually designed to do this and hide the old aluminum frames.
trim out like above
this way actually looked better, and sealed better, but your basically glueing a vinylw window to an aluminum frame, the seal can break with contraction and expansion over the years
now you have replaced a window in a vinyl or aluminum sided house without touching the siding
I told you it was ugly, we ( my company) wont do it, but I was sure paid to do a bunch of them years back when I was a grunt for someone else
if I go look at a house to bid windows, and it is vinyl, aluminum or brick or stucco, I have the luxuary now to pass on the job, its gonna leak, someday, sometime, someplace
if they really press me to do the work, we will only go route 3 or 4 and have them sign a discaliamer on #3
so maybe this will get the discussion going in a more positive way
oh yeah #4
remove the vinyl or aluminum siding, re-sheet the house with plywood, osb, etc, install windows, reside with hardi-pank or..........
caulk and seal and paint
