Window Restoration Article?

user-205728 | Posted in General Discussion on September 1, 2004 02:01am

I’ve flipped through every issue of FH laying around here, looking for that article about restoring double hung windows. The author was doing the whole works – reglazing, using epoxy to fill out rotted wood, linseed oil before setting the glass.

Does anybody remember what issue that was in?

Depends on how many I break in the process - I'll keep you in mind. Thanks!

What sizes on the glass?  I have interest in some as well.  Feel free to email me directly if you'd rather.

mostly 8 x 10. Nice old glass. Some of it is very rippled, grained, bubbly,etc..

Some is more mellow but old none the less. Most old sash would have a mix. In the old days flat unwavy was the most desirable. The hardest to make and so on.

          Hey, Curly..long time no see...

I also have a pile of it as well, even some "bull's eye" glass, the kind with the rings...

Anybody else interested, let me know..

Thanks.  Almost all of what I need is 9x13.  Not sure how many, mostly because I don't know yet how many I'm gonna break, but probably 15 or so, 10 for replacing now and some extras.  Don't have a glass stretcher, do ya?

          1. handhewn | Sep 02, 2004 01:58am | #8

How old is your house? Glass is not 9 x 12?

I can most likely get that for you if you wish.

1790/1830, but I think all the windows re-done w/1830 part.  And they're all 9x13, or the ones I have left to do anyway.  Thanks.

Roughly speaking, what is glass like that selling for?

Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell'em "Certainly, I can!"  Then get busy and find out how to do it.  T. Roosevelt

$ 4.00 - 6.00 per pane. This is a hot bed of restoration work though.
