Any idea what the going rate for fabricating window sashes? Got two quotes for two, 6 lite casements 18 x 42 x 1- 3/8. First one out of capelli wood $600. Second one, out of cypress without installing the glass but including the glass for $725. No hardware, just the sashes. I assume the first quote included the glazing. When I get my shop set up, I am going to build them myself. I estimated maybe $500. tops.

Those quotes don't seem too outrageous, the cost is mostly in the labor. Actual Labor time invested will vary a lot depending on how well a shop is set up for the work.
If you do it yourself the materials only should not even be close to $500 unless you get robbed. Shop around for both the wood and the glass prices. Now if you don't have the tooling and the cutters already then you'll be in for some more serious spending.
Thanks Oldhand:
Good ideas to think about.
It would be useful to know how much expansion space to leave between the glass and the wood frame.

1/8” all the way around won’t kill you.
Thanks for the ideas, I was facing same issue.
