Hey there sparkies. Have to run 130 feet of wire to ‘electrify’ the garage – what gauge wire do I need? Since copper is dear nowadays is aluminium okay – as it’s only going from a breaker in the main panel to the main connections in the sub panel. Main panel is a 200 amp service.
Also, in NC when the electrician ran juice to my garage he ran a phone line in the same conduit – is that okay? I have bored through 3 masonry walls and run the conduit underneath the deck as I was rebuilding it, only 50′ of CT dirt (rock) left to dig up, using 1 1/2″ PVC conduit.
Thanks for any help.

well, what size is the garage feed going to be.?
220V..? (nominal)
20A
30A
60A....?
if 60A .....then #3 Al or #4 Cu would work , but unless you are familiar with Aluminum terminations, I would advise against using it
phone line in the same conduit.....NO

OUCH! Another big vote for NO NO NO!
Assume since you have moved to CT you sold the NC house.
Prudence and honesty would indicate to at least tell the new owner (sure you remember the address<G>) the situation and of the advise that you have gotten from 2 early respondents here, and tell them the electrician's firm's name so they can have them come fix it free of charge. Realize a lot of NC jurisdictions may not require permits, but....
Don't advertise it often here, but I am an EE (despite most appearances), and in aerospace (planes and satellites) do a LOT of work that is way not per NEC, yet FAA/NASA approved and safe when well designed. Telephone and power in the same conduit are NOT goodness, not safe, would not do it myself at home even to save a dime. (and I do most anything to save a dime)
Edit PS: Lightning is the main reason it is unsafe.

Thanx for your reply. For the record we still own and rent out the home in NC, so issue will be dealt with - properly this time. Just further proof that the contractor we used to frame the additiona and garage used the cheapest subs he could find.Let's not confuse the issue with facts!
