I need to wire a 50 amp circut for an electric slide in range. I will be running the wire through the joists in an unfinished basement.could some one tell me 1) I want to use 6/3 w/g NM cable, is that ok for a basement with an unfinished ceiling? 2) does it have to be run through the joists or can it be fastened underneath and run across the bottom to be within the nec code? 3) and anything else I should know?
Thanks

Greg, You can use that cable but you should drill the joists and run it through them. Make sure you stay far enough away from the edge so that a nail or screw in future construction won't reach the cable.

Didn't say how far you're running the cable, but for a 50 Amps at 220 volts you can run copper 137 feet.
Technically, in an unfinished but accessable basement, you should protect any wires from possible mechanical abuse. This is an area of interpretation. If you plan on using a double headed axe to split fire wood in the winter downstairs, I'd run something along with the wire as it crosses the open bays. Otherwise, just keep it up away from the edges.

*Joe;I think he specified nec... which I thought was independent of where you live in the US. I guess there can be local code requirements in excess of nec, and this is good to point out.A
